The following letter to Mr. T. A. Smith also exhibits his feelings on the battle-flag resolution:--
To his old college friend the Hon. G. W. Warren, who visited him in January, 1873, he said, “Since the assault upon me in 1856, I have never been entirely well; and just now I am feeling the painful effects more than usual.” At that time Chief-Justice Chase, then quite ill, came in, and afterwards Mr. Agassiz. The conversation turning
