Jefferson,

The name proposed to be given to what is now the State of Colorado, in 1858, when an attempt was made to establish a provisional government. The scheme failed in consequence of conflicting claims on the part of the surrounding Territories. When, however, Congress created the new Territory in 1861, the name Colorado was given to it.
