Brown, Benjamin Gratz, -1885
Born in Lexington, Ky., May 28. 1826: graduated at Yale in 1847; and settled in St. Louis, where he edited the Missouri Democrat. He assisted in preventing the secession of Missouri, and was elected to the United States Senate in 1863, and governor of the State in 1871. He was the candidate for Vice-President on the Greeley ticket in 1872. He died in St. Louis, Dec. 13, 1885.
