Batangas,

A province of Luzon, Philippine Islands, bordering on San Bernardino Strait, and north of the island of Mindoro; also the name of its capital city. The province is naturally one of the richest sugar-growing districts in the Philippines, and has also a large production of cocoanut oil. Prior to the war between the United States and Spain, in 1898, the [294] city was the seat of large commerce, and had a population of over 35,000. The region gives promise of large economic returns on the application of modern methods of cultivation.
