Journalist; born in
Lyons, France, July 4, 1839; was educated in the College of Jolie Clair, near
Paris; came to the
United States in 1860, and in the following year entered the
Union army in
Duryea's Zouaves (5th New York Volunteers). At Big Bethel he saved the life of
Gen. Judson Kilpatrick.
He aided in recruiting the 165th New York Volunteers, of which he was made captain: in 1862 he participated in the siege of
Port Hudson, La.; afterwards was promoted major and lieutenant-colonel.
He next served in the 19th Corps under
Sheridan and in the department of the South.
On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers, and in August of the same year was mustered out of the service.
After the war he became the editor and publisher of the Baltimore
American.
