Xeno'crates

minor literary persons.

1. At the conclusion of his life of the celebrated philosopher of Chalcedon, Diogenes Laertius (4.15) mentions five other persons of the name. The first of them was a very ancient writer on Tactics (τακτικός). Menagius (ad loc.) identifies him with the Xenocrates mentioned by Strabo (xii. p.550) as the instructor of Hecataeus of Miletus, and Menecrates of Elaea. (See also Ukert, Untersuchungen über die Geograophie des Hecataeus und Damastes, Vimar. 1814, 8vo. pp. 5, foll. n. 4.)

William Smith. A Dictionary of Greek and Roman biography and mythology. London. John Murray: printed by Spottiswoode and Co., New-Street Square and Parliament Street. In the article on Soranus, we find: "at this present time (1848)" and this date seems to reflect the dates of works cited. 1873 - probably the printing date.
