Originally the building in which the king (rex), as the head of the State religion, performed the usual rites; and later, the one set apart for the Pontifex Maximus and perhaps for the Rex Sacrorum. (See Pontifex; Rex Sacrorum.) The word is also the pure Latin equivalent of basilica. See Basilica.
