Ercta
or Ercté (Εἰρκτή, Ἐρκτή). A remarkable isolated mountain on the northwestern coast of Sicily near Panormus. Its height is 1950 feet. Its chief celebrity was gained in the First Punic War, towards the close of which Hamilcar Barca (q.v.) shut himself with his army into this natural fortress, and maintained himself there against all the efforts of the Romans to dislodgeMount Ercta. |
