BIBLIOTHECA ASINII POLLIONIS

the first public library in Rome, established by Asinius Pollio in the ATRIUM LIBERTATIS (q.v.) after his restoration of this building from the spoils of his Parthian campaign (Ov. Trist. iii. 1. 71 ; Plin. NH vii. 115; xxxv. 10; Isid. Orig. vi. 5. 2). It contained Greek and Latin books, with portrait busts of authors, and seems to have served also as a museum for works of art in general (Plin. NH xxxvi. 23, 24, 25, 33, 34, who refers to it as Asini Pollionis monumenta; Ihm, Centralblatt f. Bibliotheksw. 1893, 515).
