that the houses of their famous men, of Aristides or
of Miltiades, as any of you can see that knows them, are not a whit more
splendid than those of their neighbors. For selfish greed had no place in their
statesmanship, but each thought it his duty to further the common weal. And so
by their good faith towards their fellow Greeks, their piety towards the gods,
and their equality among themselves, they deserved and won a great prosperity.
