Severe gale at New Haven. New Haven, Conn., Nov. 5. --A severe gale from the East visited the city last evening, commencing about 5 o'clock, and ending about 11 o'clock. Many trees were prostrated, and the steeple of the Wooster Place Church (Second Baptist) was thrown upon the square. Its height was 240 feet. The bell, porch, entablature columns and other front works also fell, crushing the iron fence around the church, but doing little other damage. Had the steeple fell to the north or south, it would have crushed two or three private mansions. The loss is four or five thousand dollars. Young Stafford, who was stabbed by the student Belden, died at 7 o'clock this evening.

A colored Burglar shot. Newburyport, Vt., Nov. 5 --A colored man giving the name of Jas. F. Pickering, late of California, was shot dead last night while robbing a dwelling house. Numerous burglaries have recently greatly excited our citizens.

Fire at Springfield. Springfield, Mass., Nov. 5. --The finishing mill of the Parsons Paper Company, at Holyoke, was nearly all burned to-day. Loss $50,000, one-half of which is insured at Springfield, Hartford and New Haven. The manufacturing mill was unharmed.

Post-office Robbery. Holliday's, Pa., Nov. 5 --John A. McCormick, assistant postmaster at Newry, Blair county, has been arrested on the charge of robbing the mails.

Political matters here, as well as elsewhere in these United States, will soon have reached the culminating point. With us the excitement is waxing warm, and the three-cornered fight raging fiercely, though it is generally conceded by all parties that there is but little hope for the defeat of Lincoln, while many are of the opinion that his election will burst asunder the cords which bind together this glorious Confederacy of States. The Circuit Court for this Judicial District commenced a regular term in this city on Saturday last. The case of Geo. W. and W. W. Hardwicke, in connection with the fatal shooting affray on the 23d of June last with the Messrs. Button, which resulted in the death of Mr. Joseph Button, was brought before the Grand Jury. A true bill was found against G. W. Hardwicke, while the bill against William Hardwicke was ignored. No other business appearing,

The news that Austria has one hundred thousand men in Verona alone had been confirmed. Mantua and Peschova was likewise strongly garrisoned. The Pope had assured the Representatives from France at Rome that he has no intention of leaving. An article in the Constitutional semi-officially defines the part Napoleon will take in Italian affairs as that of non-intervention, and argues for a settlement of an organized force in Italy by a Congress. The very Latest.arrival of the Persia. Cape Race, Nov. 5. --The Persia arrived here Saturday night. Italian affairs were unchanged. The Warsaw meeting adjourned on the 26th. Unreliable reports, state that a principle European Congress had been agreed upon. It was reported that Austria had proposed mediation to France for pacific solution of the Italian question. An imperial decree raises the price of tobacco in France. Commercial. Good staple grades of cotton firm and full rates paid; other grades weak. Flour quiet. --Wheat slightly lower. Provisions steady. The House burning in Cherokee Nation. Leavenworth, K. T., Nov. 5. --The Fort Scott Democrat confirms the report of the burning of seventy-four dwellings in the Cherokee Central lands by the Indian Agent.
