TVLINE | What was it like having Jim and Mayim back and getting to write for these characters again?
I mean, it was so great to have them back just as people. We spent so many years with Jim and Mayim, and we still see them from time to time and keep in touch. Jim, obviously, works on the show, but we mostly see him on Zoom from New York. On a personal level, just to get to hang out with them in person again was great, and then to watch them step back into these characters was really emotional. I think Jim and Mayim both have said that they were very nervous and that they weren’t sure they could just step right back into [these roles], but it didn’t feel like that from watching them. It was also a difference of going from a multi-cam show [shot in front of a live studio audience] to a single-cam show, and watching them make those adjustments to play it differently. You play everything a little bit smaller, and they just did it so effortlessly. From the outside, just watching them slip back into these characters, felt really great.
TVLINE | I think many fans, myself included, were expecting a fleeting glimpse of Sheldon and Amy — perhaps they’d be saved for the tag scene. I was not expecting to see Jim and Mayim in what felt like a third of the episode!
Like you said, people know that they’re going to be in the finale, but is there still a way to surprise people? Maybe most people think that this is going to be a coda at the end, so hopefully cutting to them right off the bat will come as a bit of a surprise. We were also trying to be really careful not to let them overwhelm the finale because, at the end of the day, this was still a Young Sheldon finale and this still had to be about the Cooper family. I feel pretty good about how we struck that balance. It was more than just a cameo, but that the whole episode didn’t revolve around them was important to us.
“I told you we should let Penny babysit!”
That was a beautiful! It’s so hilarious and sweet that Aunt Penny is a “corrupting influence” on Sheldon’s daughter and that she wants to be like her. It tells me that the group, at least Leonard, Penny, Sheldon, and Amy, are still close.
My head canon is that Leonard Cooper and Name TBA Cooper are twins just like Sheldon and Missy.
Sheldon did mention being affected by the birth of their son, not their twins. So even as crass as Sheldon can be, I don’t think he’d ignore a daughter.
In my original head canon, they have Leonard then a set a girl/boy twins, and then another daughter who was a surprise. Now I’m thinking they must only have one daughter.
This was exactly what I needed after the heart wrenching funeral episode. I loved seeing Amy and Sheldon. They still have it – that funny little back and forth they did oh so well on The Big Bang Theory. I chuckled at finding out their kids were into sports and acting lessons. Poor Sheldon. Loved the reference to Penny. Loved seeing that picture of Sheldon and George together on his desk. I just loved the finale. Glad they didn’t end the series on the funeral episode. I am going to miss the Coopers and co.
The finale was good but too much Old Sheldon and Amy. I would have been fine with a cameo but they dominated the episode when I wanted to see more of Mee Maw, Missy and Georgie.
While I really enjoyed the finale, it did give me Enterprise finale vibes lol
Yeah my thought exactly, kill off a beloved character and focus on a different shows universe for the final, enterprise got major backlash for what was suppose to be a valentine for nearly 20 continuous seasons of tng/voy/ds9/ent.
Completely agree.
Agree. I would have preferred just the usual voice over with older Sheldon talking about learning to appreciate his father after becoming a father himself. I would have rather seen more with the Cooper family adjusting after losing George.
Does this mean Georgie & Mandy has to last until Thursday, May 16, 2030?
It was just okay. I think TBBT finale was much better. I did enjoy the Old Sheldon n Amy cameos, but thought the baptism storyline was way too predictable. Love this show so much. Gonna miss it!! I sure hope Meemaw, Mary n Missy are in the next show.
Sure, but the baptism story was about why he did it, not if he would do it.
Ok, I have to rant about idiot TV writers giving supposedly super intelligent characters multiple PhDs. You’d have to be stupid to have to do a second PhD, and no reputable university would allow a student to take another doctorate because it would mean they failed to learn how to be a scholar/researcher/scientist the first time. Only part of the PhD degree is about learning the information they need to work in their field (and usually they grant a masters during the doctorate journey to indicate the information learning part of the PhD) the rest is DOING the research and/or teaching to work as a professor, researcher or scientist. And smarter people can’t just compress that learning into shorter times, because TIME is a factor in doing research. So, no, brilliant people can’t just do 3 doctorates simultaneously or in a year. It’s not like doing high school in year for a genius kid. The only time I’ve ever heard of someone doing multiple PhDs in the US is if their first one is in a non-science field and then they want to be an expert in a science based field. Scholars doing advanced work do often have multiple masters degrees–because it’s about mastering the material they need to do their research. So no, the fictional Sheldon would not have multiple doctorates (unless they were honorary degrees).
As rare as it is, the concept of people getting more than one exists in our reality, so there’s no reason that it can’t in a fictional one.
But you can publish a paper and win a Nobel Prize in the same year, right?
As someone with a career in education, I assure multiple doctorates are a reality. While many stop with one, others explore different areas of study.
Maybe you’re thinking about Sheldon at par with the rest of the gang ! He had been way long been in Caltech while the rest were still in high school in their places of birth/residence. Sheldon must had been a campus resident doing various jobs as holder of a premium scholarship and well-deserving at that. He must have decided to live-out around the same time the rest of the gang were starting their professional work catching up with Sheldon.
I can’t imagine that Sheldon would have wanted to do another doctorate (under the tutelage of another professor) when he could be doing meaningful post-doc research of his own, especially in his field.
I enjoyed seeing all the items related to both shows, but the home office seemed too cluttered for Sheldon’s comfort. He always collected a lot of stuff, but kept it extremely neat and spread out in larger spaces.
the end is the beginning….
Unfortunately, my DirecTv went out and I couldn’t get my antenna to work. I’m going to watch it on CBS.com. I really wanted to watch it with everyone else!
I guess we’ll never know why Sheldon never mentioned Paige, Dr. Sturgis, and Dr. Linkletter as an adult.
Absolutely hysterical that their child is an athlete. He has to be as unique in his family as Sheldon was in his. George’s genetics skipped a generation and live strong in his grandson.
I like to think the daughter’s name is Georgia.
I liked the first episode. The last episode I didn’t like at all. There were characters in this episode that we most likely won’t see again. it would have been nice to have given them all of the air time that was given to Amy and Geezer Sheldon. I didn’t need to see Amy and Geezer Sheldon at all.
Early 40s is “geezer”? Punk kids say obnoxious things like that as if they aren’t going to get old!!
Before you start whining, look up the definition of geezer. BTW, the actor is 51 years old, and Sheldon looked every bit that 51 years old. He sure as heck didn’t look 40. He looked old than George. I knew saying geezer would cause someone to throw a fit, because they would rather throw a fit first, before looking up the definition of geezer. I got news for you, young people don’t use the word geezer.
Again, look up the definition of geezer. It fits.
On a related note, life expectancy in the United States has decline over the past few years.
The way the wrote modern Sheldon and Amy ruined it for me. The fact she threw out his stuff was so thing that showed they wrote for tv not the people they represented. And for her to do that makes me more sad for Sheldon as a character than for the death of his father.
I am senior citizen and followed Shelton with so much joy and anticipation every week just see what they were doing. They became a big part of my life. I will miss them. All the cast members won my heart.
I was really hoping Mary could’ve cleared up Sheldon’s misconception about George cheating. Maybe I’ll just have that play out in my head. She visits Sheldon, Amy, et al for Leonard’s hockey championship and reads through the manuscript before Sheldon sends it off. I’d love to hear that conversation.
