"The Smashing Pumpkins" return with a new free digital download, the first in a series of 11 mini-albums. This one is called Teargarden By Kaleidyscope 1: Songs for a Sailor, which seems like a classic title dreamed up by Billy Corgan. Oh, and this is "The Smashing Pumpkins" rather than The Smashing Pumpkins because really all that's left of the original band is Corgan and the name.

I Get Whatever I Need

In the 90s I saw Garbage open up for Smashing Pumpkins. Garbage was as tight and competent live as they are on disc and Shirley Manson was dead sexy. I could have done without Billy Corgan's masturbatory guitar work throughout the Pumpkins' overlong performance, but it was nice to see them at their peak.

I reminisce because I guess today is retro day in the new release bin. Metric releases Fantasies, which includes Help, I'm Alive - an incredibly catchy tune that successfully straddles the line between Garbage and Breeders and would have been right at home on any 90s alt-pop radio station (like my 107dot5 in Des Moines). Likewise, Silversun Pickups obsess over Smashing Pumpkins with Swoon. If you're looking to take yourself back a decade or so, these new releases might be for you.

Want to go back even further? Simon & Garfunkel release Live 1969, which is chockfull of some of their best tunes (I Am a Rock, For Emily Whenever I May Find Her, The Boxer, Kathy's Song). Something for every retro taste today!

It's either 90s redux or acid reflux depending on your opinion of two stalwarts of the grunge era.

First, Pearl Jam is re-releasing their classic Ten on 3/23/09:

Four different versions of 'Ten' will be released, with each edition featuring the original and remastered version, plus a remix of the album by producer Brendan O'Brien.

LP of the band's 1992 'Drop In The Park' concert
Replica of Pearl Jam three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder's original vocal dubs

Second, Smashing Pumpkins' leader Billy Corgan said the Pumpkins will now only be a singles band because nobody listens to their albums anymore. He also said former Pumpkin James Iha drove him insane. That explains so much.
