No No No, Don't Pass Me Over

Dos De Mayo Block PartyIowans, your attention please (but please not your sympathy).

Dos Rios Cantina & Tequila Lounge is hosting the first annual Dos De Mayo Block Party in downtown Des Moines on Court Avenue. When, you may ask? For those not hip to the Spanish lingo, "dos de mayo" does not translate to "dose of mayonnaise" in English, comprende?

BoDeans are headliners - Bo-fucking-Deans people! Envy Corps are the local draw - Envy-fucking-Corps people! Spiffy other local acts round out the bill. Cheap food and booze and the weather should be perfect. $15/$20 tickets. What's not to love?

Write Des Moines on Several Matters

Attention Iowa bands:

The Greater Des Moines Music Coalition released the following request via TheirSpace:

The Greater Des Moines Music Coalition is seeking Iowa bands to play at the 3rd annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on March 29th, 2008 in Des Moines.

In the two years GDP has taken place, it's created an enthusiastic following of indie music lovers from across the state. This year's GDP looks to be no different. We're looking for 8-10 acts from indie to punk to play on two stages. The first two GDP's featured acts such as The Envy Corps, Poison Control Center, General Sherman, and more.

Professional, hard-working bands interested in performing at this year's GDP are encouraged to send information or EPK's to info@desmoinesmc.com or mail press kits and demos to DMMC PO Box 41490 Des Moines, IA 50311. Include information about your most recent or upcoming projects, tours, and shows.
Good luck.

I Didn't Mean It

Things are picking up a bit for Ames-based The Envy Corps. They're finishing their debut CD and this month, they're releasing an EP over in the UK. They're currently touring there now so it seems they wanted to get a little product into their hands. Nothing new on that EP if you already own their independently released EP. I'm going to say EP again for the hell of it. EP.

Nate at Zzz Records in Des Moines announced this to his email list:

For those of you who are fans of Ames rockers The Envy Corps,
listen up:
Vertigo Records is going to be releasing a double 7" single called the

"Story Problem EP" in England later this month. There will be 4 songs
on the EP, and it will allegedly only be available on vinyl. Since it's
an import, it will be a bit on the high side (looks like we'll be selling
them for about $11.00). However, if you want one, you may want to place a
pre-order to make sure we have enough for all. By the way, we still
have a few copies of their latest CD at $7.99, too.
Sounds great, but you can already pre-order (release date: 2/22) the Story Problem EP via Amazon. I suppose if you're a collector, you may want to pick up the vinyl too.

Listen to several of the tracks at theirspace. Also note the tune Surgery, which doesn't seem to be on any release yet. Perhaps a preview of their upcoming full-length.

For the local folks, The Envy Corps is coming back to Iowa in March:

Mar 23 2007 5:00P Vaudeville Mews - Early; Des Moines, Iowa

Mar 23 2007 9:00P Vaudeville Mews - Late; Des Moines, Iowa

Mar 31 2007 8:00P Picador [Mission Creek Fest]; Iowa City, Iowa

This is a Thursday Afternoon

Envy CorpsMan, it's so cool when a local band has the potential to hit it big. Nobody from Iowa has hit bigger than Slipknot, and that was and is a fun ride to watch (download here). Slipknot side project Stone Sour has done quite well nationally as well (download here). On the poppier side of life, The Nadas seems to be on the verge of something big after hitting it hard locally and regionally over the past ten years (download here).

Now, the latest great story is The Envy Corps, which was just signed to Vertigo Records based out of London. They've been tapped to open for The Killers on a few dates of their tour and they're heading into the studio (in Iowa!) to record their debut album. Listen to their tunes on theirspace and order their debut EP before it finds a permanent place on eBay at a price you may not be willing to spend.

Good luck, guys. Make us proud. Damn, now I feel dumb for never catching them live - yet.
