Photo Friday: Dragon Tails in Copenhagen

Copenhagen, Denmark, is sometimes called the "City of Spires" because there are so many apexes belonging to churches and castles in this town.  Certainly, the spire at the top of the old Copenhagen stock exchange building is the most unusual.  It is known as the Dragon Spire, and it is formed by four dragons on their forelegs with their tails intertwined.  Built in the early 1600s, the spire reaches a height of over 180 feet.

Disney's Inspiration

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a big city, of course, but the feel is more like a peaceful seaside town.  Copenhagen is a lovely place to visit with your family.  How could it not be, when the city’s number one tourist attraction is an amusement park?  Tivoli Gardens was the inspiration for Walt Disney after he visited there in 1948 and loved it!  Michael Jackson offered to buy Tivoli Gardens after he performed there, but was turned down!  It’s an exquisitely landscaped, 15 acre park built in 1843 with stunning old buildings and lots of kid-friendly restaurants.
Rides at Tivoli
Rides at the park range from gentle carousels, boat rides on the lake, and a trolley bus, to several thrilling roller coaster rides.  There’s a pantomime theater and cars on tracks.  On Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays the Tivoli Boys Guard parades through the park, and puts on a great show.  These 8 - 16 year old boys dress in uniforms with bear skin hats (like the ones the guards at Buckingham Palace wear) and perform concerts.  According to the Tivoli website, there are changing tables and free diapers in the Puslerum building, toys for impatient siblings, and a microwave for heating bottles.  My advice is to visit Tivoli during the day – it’s mostly families at that time – and the lines are much longer at night.  (Although the lights and fireworks after dark are magical!)  But remember, the summertime has 16 to 18 hours of daylight in Copenhagen!

Copenhagen city hall
In addition to Tivoli Gardens, which is a must-see for all visitors to Copenhagen, there are lots of other children’s attractions in this harbor town.  There’s a Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, the Danmarks Akvarium (aquarium),  and a great zoo (Zoologisk Have) with a petting zoo.  The Wonderful World of Hans Christian Andersen is interesting for fans of the Danish fairy-tale master (kids under 4 are free.)

Finally, I love family bicycle tours and Copenhagen is another perfect city for cycling.  Almost every major street has a designated bike lane, and in the summer, City Bikes are free to ride within city limits.

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!

I prefer to be the harbinger of easy and enjoyable travel to Europe, but if it's not a volcano, it's a record-breaking snowfall causing trouble.  London's Heathrow airport, the world's busiest international airport, is closed.  Flights are delayed and cancelled in Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin.  Rail travel is stalled in most of Europe.  Many travelers' Christmas plans are ruined.

I can't help thinking about my Christmas trip to Adelboden, Switzerland, next year, with EIGHT high school-aged Girl Scouts in tow!  Sleeping for days on a cot in an airport with a group of very disappointed girls would break my heart (not to mention my patience.)

To keep up the Christmas cheer, let's remember the countries in Europe that can handle snow and ice with ease and beauty (I did not take these photos):

Ballachulish Western Highland, Scotland

Copenhagen, Denmark

Helsinki, Finland

Iceland

Lofoton Islands, Norway

Stockholm, Sweden
