Rockville Roy Rogers now offering drive-up ordering service

The only negative thing about the Roy Rogers at 718 Rockville Pike is that the restaurant oddly doesn't have a drive-thru. In the new abnormal where fast food chains are vacuuming in big bucks via their drive-thrus, this presented a major obstacle for restaurants like this Roy's location. Like many businesses, they have now adapted to prosper in this challenging situation. A new drive-up ordering service is now available for those who'd like a Double-R-Bar-Burger and holster of fries, but who don't feel safe going into an enclosed restaurant right now.

ROY ROGERS OPENS IN ROCKVILLE! (PHOTOS)

Roy Rogers made a triumphant return to Rockville yesterday, and RockvilleNights.com was on the scene. The Fixin's Bar takes center stage inside the restaurant, just as it did in the old days. One feature not found at the old Congressional Plaza Roy's? Two new Coca-Cola Freestyle soda fountain machines, from which I dispensed myself a refreshing Mello Yello. Just remember that the soda jet is slightly forward from the ice-dispensing cup position, or you'll get more soda on your hand than in your cup.

Another nice touch was the prominent image of Roy Rogers himself on the wall, with his now-legendary Promise to customers. Some menu items have been tweaked to be more premium, such as the use of brand-name Hormel Cure 81 ham atop the Double R burger, and Edy's ice cream in the milkshakes. The flavors of the Double R, famous Roy's fried chicken, and french fries - I ordered the Holster Fries version, of course - were reassuringly familiar and delicious. Roy's veterans like myself will have to get over the fact that the fry holster is now red, instead of the faux-leather, realistic brown gun holster design from the 1970s and 80s. At first, I thought they'd given me the wrong fries, but realized my mistake when I saw the words, Holster Fry, on the side.

What was my verdict on the 2014 Double R Burger? Watch my review to find out, and get all the details. For those who were more familiar with Roys in the mid-to-late 90s, you'll be glad to find the Gold Rush Chicken Sandwich is still on the menu.

Never thought I'd be strapping
on a pair of these again...

They've got side dishes you'll remember, like cole slaw - and new ones you wouldn't expect to find at Roy's, like macaroni and cheese. For dessert, I can never pass up a brownie sundae. Roy's had a brownie in the old days, but not a brownie sundae. The new Roy's has the sundae, and I'm looking forward to trying that on a future visit.

Double R Burger

With the addition of Roy Rogers, Rockville Pike between Montrose Parkway and N. Washington Street now offers a smorgasbord of some of the top fast food restaurants in America: Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Taco Bell, Wendy's, Popeye's, and now Roy Rogers. It's a shame that A&W left College Plaza, because they have no other location in the Montgomery County area. Fortunately, Roy's has brought a another classic American burger to the Pike to take its place.

ROY ROGERS ROCKVILLE OPENING MONDAY, DECEMBER 15!

Yeehaw! Yahoo! Roy Rogers fans, your prayers have been answered. The new Roy Rogers in Rockville, located at 718 Rockville Pike (across from Marlo Furniture) is opening this Monday, December 15, at 10:30 AM!

The first 50 guests in line will receive a year's supply of free Roy Rogers food. Monday's opening marks a historic return for the legendary Roy Rogers chain, which had operated decades ago in Rockville. Started by the Marriott Corporation, Roy's is now owned by Plamondon Company, which was founded by a Roy's franchisee.

ROY ROGERS OPENING POSTPONED TO DECEMBER

Hold on to your fry holsters, Roy Rogers fans. The restaurant says the planned early November opening of its Rockville Pike location has been postponed until mid-December.

The signs are up on the future Rockville location of Roy Rogers. Missing from the city for many years, Roy's will be wrangling up their legendary fried chicken, roast beef sandwiches and Double R burgers starting in early November. The new restaurant is across from Marlo Furniture at 718 Rockville Pike, which a lot of us "old-timers" will remember as a Ford dealership.

Whatever the holdup was in Roy Rogers' return to Rockville has been resolved. Coming Soon signage and permits are finally up at the 718 Rockville Pike location (longtime site of a Ford dealership, across from Marlo Furniture) of the first Roy Rogers restaurant Rockville has had in decades. The restaurant is currently hiring staff, and expects to open the first week in November.

Finally, we're seeing activity towards the opening of a Roy Rogers restaurant in Rockville. The Frederick-based fast food chain seems to be hiring a manager for its future Rockville location, which - although not yet publicly identified - is believed to be in the vacant retail structure on the former Century Ford site on Rockville Pike (across from Marlo Furniture). The delayed return to Rockville has tried the patience of ranch hands across lower Montgomery County for about a year.

Roy Rogers' ad has now been deleted (hopefully because it was filled, and not because of another delay), but I captured the Craigslist screen image above.

ROCKVILLE ROY ROGERS DELAYED UNTIL FALL

Another disappointment for Roy Rogers fans in Rockville - the return of Roy's to Rockville Pike has been postponed again. A spokesperson said Thursday that permitting issues are holding up the new restaurant. The future Roy Rogers will be on the former Century Ford dealership site, across from Marlo Furniture on the Pike. It is now scheduled to open sometime in September or October.

ROY ROGERS ROCKVILLE OPENING POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING 2014(!!)

The planned summer 2013 grand opening of Roy Rogers in Rockville never came to pass. No official explanation has been given, but one real estate source tells me the restaurant may have been held up by a larger property dispute.

Roy Rogers has yet to announce the street address for the new Rockville Pike restaurant. But I believe it is in this retail building on the former site of Century Ford, across from Marlo furniture.

Stay tuned, but it sounds like we're in for a long wait.

Happy trails to Rockville: Roy Rogers restaurant is returning to Rockville.

The new Roy's will open this summer on Rockville Pike.

But the company has been secretive about the exact location. The only clues it has given are that it will be south of Town Center, on the Pike, and near Marlo.

Behold! I believe I've found the future home of the legendary fast food restaurant. It's on the old Century Ford property, diagonally across from Marlo.
