List of Famous Meteorologists
- John Dalton FRS (; 6 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) was an English chemist, physicist, and meteorologist. He is best known for introducing the atomic theory into chemistry, and for his research into color blindness, sometimes referred to as Daltonism in his honour.
- Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit FRS (; German: [ˈfaːʁənhaɪt]; 24 May 1686 – 16 September 1736) was a physicist, inventor, and scientific instrument maker. Fahrenheit was born in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland), then a predominantly German-speaking Hanseatic city in the Pomeranian Voivodeship of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, but lived most of his life in the Dutch Republic (1701–1736) and was one of the notable figures in the Golden Age of Dutch science and technology. A pioneer of exact thermometry, he helped lay the foundations for the era of precision thermometry by inventing the mercury-in-glass thermometer (first practical, accurate thermometer) and Fahrenheit scale (first standardized temperature scale to be widely used). In other words, Fahrenheit's inventions ushered in the first revolution in the history of thermometry (branch of physics concerned with methods of temperature measurement). From the early 1710s until the beginnings of the electronic era, mercury-in-glass thermometers were among the most reliable and accurate thermometers ever invented.
- Charles Thomson Rees Wilson, CH, FRS (14 February 1869 – 15 November 1959) was a Scottish physicist and meteorologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the cloud chamber.
- Alfred Lothar Wegener (; German: [ˈʔalfʁeːt ˈveːgənɐ]; 1 November 1880 – November 1930) was a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist. During his lifetime he was primarily known for his achievements in meteorology and as a pioneer of polar research, but today he is most remembered as the originator of the theory of continental drift by hypothesizing in 1912 that the continents are slowly drifting around the Earth (German: Kontinentalverschiebung). His hypothesis was controversial and not widely accepted until the 1950s, when numerous discoveries such as palaeomagnetism provided strong support for continental drift, and thereby a substantial basis for today's model of plate tectonics. Wegener was involved in several expeditions to Greenland to study polar air circulation before the existence of the jet stream was accepted. Expedition participants made many meteorological observations and were the first to overwinter on the inland Greenland ice sheet and the first to bore ice cores on a moving Arctic glacier.

- Born April 29, 1931, Edward S. Epstein is one of the world's leading experts on statistical meteorology and climatology. His research career began in the mid-1950s when he worked at the Air Force Cambridge Research Center, Arizona State University, and The Pennsylvania State University. His first published paper appeared in the Journal of Meteorology in 1956 on "A New Method for Determining the Vertical Distribution of Ozone from a Ground Station." This was followed by two papers in 1959 on power spectrum analysis of ozone and on vertical velocities in the lower stratosphere. During the decade of the 1960s, Dr. Epstein was at the University of Michigan, first as a professor of meteorology and later as department chairman. While there, he published many papers on probability forecasting, quality control, and forecast utility. Some of these were written jointly with Allan Murphy, an important scientific collaboration. In the 1968/69 academic year, Dr. Epstein was a visiting scientist at the University of Stockholm. While in Stockholm, he developed the ranked probability score that is now widely used in forecast verification. Here he also wrote his famous paper on stochastic-dynamic prediction published in Tellus at the end of 1969. This topic was developed further when he returned to the University of Michigan and published several papers with two of his (now well known) students, Rex Fleming and Eric Pitcher. Dr. Epstein and his family moved from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Washington, D.C. in 1973 when he took a high level executive position in the U.S. Department of Commerce as an associate administrator of NOAA. In 1978 he became the director of NOAA's National Climate Program Office, and in 1981 he was named the chief of NOAA's Climate and Earth Sciences Laboratory. Dr. Epstein's research career was rejuvenated in 1983 when he was appointed as the chief Scientist of the Climate Analysis Center of the U.S. National Weather Service's National Meteorological Center. A most impressive publication appeared two years later as a meteorological monograph (American Meteorological Society) entitled Statistical Inference and Prediction in Climatology. A Bayesian Approach. The seeds of this monograph go back to 1962 when he published a paper in the Journal of Applied Meteorology entitled "A Bayesian Approach to Decision Making in Applied Meteorology." Another major contribution during this period was a 162-page NOAA Technical Report in 1988 entitled "A Precipitation Climatology of 5-Day Periods." When the AMS started a new publication called the journal of Climate in 1988, Dr. Epstein had a paper in the first issue entitled "A Spectral Climatology." He has published three additional papers in that journal:a paper on 5-day precipitation with Anthony Barnston, a paper on the optimum number of harmonics to represent normals in 1991, and a paper on obtaining climatological values from monthly means, also in 1991'. In addition, he wrote an excellent review paper on long-range weather prediction in 1988 in another new AMS journal called Weather and Forecasting. The following year he and Allan Murphy published an important paper in Monthly Weather Review entitled "Skill Scores and Correlation Coefficients in Model Verification."Dr. Epstein retired from NOAA in 1996 because of complications of Parkinson's Disease, for which he was first diagnosed in 1984.

Dmitry Lachinov studied in the St. Petersburg University, where he was a pupil of Heinrich Lenz, Pafnuty Chebyshev and Feodor Petrushevsky. In 1862, when the University was closed because of the students' unrest, Lachinov went to Germany and for two and a half years studied there under the guidance of Gustav Kirchhoff, Robert Bunsen and Hermann Helmholtz, attending practical lessons in their laboratories in Heidelberg and Tübingen. In a paper released in 1880, Lachinov became the first one to point out the possibility of electricity transmission over long distances, and to propose the means of achieving it — 18 months before the first publication of the article with similar conclusions by Marcel Deprez. In 1889 Lachinov wrote the first textbook on meteorology and climatology in Russia. In its 2nd edition (July 1895) he gave the first description of the lightning detector invented earlier by Alexander Popov (the device was also a prototype of the first practical radio receiver). Lachinov's own inventions include a mercury pump, economizer for electricity consumption, electrical insulation tester (or defectoscope), optical dynamometer, a special types of photometer and electrolyser. One of his main achievements was a method of industrial synthesis of hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis (1888). Dmitry Lachinov is great-grandfather of physical chemist Mikhail Schultz.
