- A knack for creating outrageous, foul-mouthed characters in short comic videos helped to make Shane Dawson a star on YouTube and granted him access to mainstream fame through a variety of platforms. Born Shane Lee Yaw on July 19, 1988 in Long Beach, California, he began making short comedic videos in high school as a means of contending with a tumultuous home life. He developed his technical skills in video production while in high school and launched his first YouTube channel, ShaneDawsonTV, in 2008; one of his early videos, "Fred is Dead," which parodied Lucas Cruikshank's hyperactive character Fred Figglehorn, attracted substantial viewer numbers, which helped to mint Dawson as a nascent YouTube star. Subsequent videos, which featured Dawson parodying pop culture figures like Paris Hilton or performing as recurring characters of his own creation, like the garishly dressed Shanaynay or the aggressive but affectionate Aunt Hilda, led to the creation of a second YouTube channel, ShaneDawsonTV2, and a third, titled Shane, which showcased his daily video blog entries. He soon began working on larger-scale projects, including a series titled "SD High," and a show in conjunction with Sony Pictures and Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Pictures shingle. Neither of these came to fruition, but Dawson's first music video, "SUPERLUV!" reached No. 28 on the iTunes Pop chart. In 2013, he added a podcast, Shane and Friends, to his ever-increasing media empire, and directed his first feature, "Not Cool" (2014). The film, produced as part of the reality competition series "The Chair" (Starz), received universally negative reviews, but won the competition, earning Dawson a $250,000 cash prize. Dawson made his publishing debut with I Hate Myselfie, a collection of personal essays based on his upbringing and experiences. A proposed pilot for NBC titled "Losin' It" failed to receive a full order of episodes, but Dawson rebounded by signing with the subscription video service Fullscreen for new video content. He also earned headlines that same year for releasing a video in which he came out to viewers as bisexual.

- Logan Paul parlayed his talent for brief bursts of physical comedy into an enormously popular and financially profitable career as a YouTube personality and occasional film and television actor, until an unexpected scandal cut his burgeoning career short. Born Logan Alexander Paul on April 1, 1995 in Westlake, Ohio, he reportedly began making internet videos for a YouTube channel at the age of 10, but focused most of his teenaged energy on scholastic sports, with a particular focus on football and wrestling. Paul put aside these interests after enrolling at Ohio University, where he studied industrial engineering and maintaining a modest presence on YouTube. His standing on the social media site changed dramatically when he entered a short, six-second video created on the internet video sharing service Vine into a contest sponsored by Virgin Mobile. His entry proved to be one of the most shared videos in the contest, and by the end of 2013, his Vine account had over one million followers viewing and sharing his comic efforts, which largely hinged on broad slapstick comedy or Paul placing himself in harm's way, with decidedly nerve-rattling results. By 2014, he had over 3.1 million followers on social media platforms, with 150,000 alone on YouTube, where his first Vine compilation was viewed four million times in a single week. Such a sizable audience made Paul an extremely attractive showcase for companies, and he soon began earning thousands of dollars from advertising revenue. In 2015, he was named the tenth most influential figure on Vine, while his YouTube channels - which split into two outlets, one devoted to his comedy sketches and the other a daily video blog, or "vlog" - were followed by 4.36 million and 15.7 million viewers, respectively, by 2018. Interest from film and television studios was a natural next step for Paul, though his acting roles outside of YouTube Red productions like the science fiction thriller "The Thinning" (2016) were limited to guest appearances on series like "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" (NBC, 1999- ). Social media remained his most popular showcase, and in this capacity, he enjoyed a successful partnership with Dwayne Johnson on a series of 2017 shorts that detailed, in comic broad strokes, why his guest appearances in all of Johnson's films had been removed from the final release. But a pair of controversial videos posted that same year did much to undermine his shot at mainstream acceptance: a November 23 video titled "No Handlebars," which borrowed a sample of the Flobots single "Handlebars" and featured Paul appearing to ride women like bicycles, was lambasted by the media. A month later, Paul uploaded a video that depicted the corpse of a man who had committed suicide by hanging in Aokigahara, a forest in northwestern Japan where numerous similar deaths had occurred over many years. Seen by over 6 million people within 24 hours, both Paul and the video were widely criticized, and YouTube was petitioned to remove his channel. His channels were eventually removed from Google Preferred and production was halted on his Comcast video series, "Logan Paul vs." More significantly, the video and its ensuing uproar prompted YouTube to review its posting policies. He offered a number of video apologies in the wake of the incident, and posted a lengthy look at suicide prevention to his vlog channel in late January 2018.

- Hannah Hart was a YouTube personality who was best known for creating the widely popular video series "My Drunk Kitchen." Born and raised in the Bay Area, Hart always had a desire to be an entertainer. An excellent student, she excelled in English throughout high school, and dreamt of becoming a writer. In her early 20s Hart spent a brief period living abroad in Japan, where she grew to love and appreciate the Japanese language. Upon returning to the states Hart enrolled in a school close to home, the University of California Berkeley, where she studied English and Japanese language. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 2009 and immediately moved to Brooklyn to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a writer. Hart quickly realized, however, that hacking it out in the cutthroat world of New York publishing was a lot harder than she anticipated, not to mention she now had to earn a living in one of the most expensive cities in the country. With her savings running out Hart took a job proofreading Japanese literature for a Manhattan-based translating company to make ends meet. With her artistic hopes and dreams dwindling, thanks to the drudgery of her day job, Hart turned to YouTube on a whim one evening and posted a funny video of herself making a grilled cheese sandwich while drunk. The video quickly went viral and within a few days Hart's little video had earned over 100,000 views on YouTube. Seeing that she had hit on something special, Hart started posting more videos of herself drinking and cooking and named the series "My Drunk Kitchen." More and more people started watching and within a few months Hart was able to quit her boring proofreading job and post videos to YouTube full-time. Hart eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue other endeavors outside of YouTube videos and had some success in 2014 when she starred in the indie comedy "Camp Takota." However, as of 2016 "My Drunk Kitchen" continued to be Hart's primary means of notoriety, thus earning her millions of fans as well as a comfortable living in sunny Los Angeles. In addition to her YouTube videos she also released a parody companion cooking book which shot up the New York Times bestseller list upon its publication in September of 2014.
