The world of professional race car drivers is all about high speed excitement. Whether you’re into modern anime or you’d rather stick to the old school classics, there are plenty of great anime series about fast cars and dangerous driving. Though it’s not the most popular anime genre, car racing anime has a lot to offer fans - especially fans who love cars and racing in the real world.

Classics like Speed Racer may have defined the genre, but there are many new racing anime that put a fresh spin on the concept of auto racing and street racing. For fans of Formula One, there’s ‘80s series, F. The thrilling anime series all about speed and drifting, Initial D, is many fans' first foray into the genre, but there are lesser-known anime about Japanese car racing like Wangan Midnight and Redline that are definitely worth checking out.

What is the greatest racing anime of all time? That's up to you.

  • Initial D

When most people think about car racing anime, Initial D is the first one that comes to mind.

Despite being surrounded by car maniacs, Takumi Fujiwara has no interest in the subject. Cars remind him of his burdensome morning job of delivering tofu for his parents' restaurant. But after an encounter with the Akagi Red Suns, two racing aces who come to his town to conquer a nearby race track, he might not be able to avoid the subject much longer. Why? Because he manages to surpass these pro racers by driving an old beat-up Toyota, and the Red Suns aren't about to let that kind of talent go to waste.
