Hey Guys and Dave,

I thought I was done with this thread and was gonna move on but Dave Darling's response caught me. This was actually just what I was waiting for. Everyone has been telling me it had never been done, and knew "exactly" that it was a bad idea. And I'm sure they were talking from experience of having tried it themselves right? They kinda hung on to the Honda swap idea a little too long even though I was more than willing to accept other options. A few made other swap suggestions of which I made note. Now I'm finally getting some decent feedback on other conversions that would be much simpler. Thanks Dave, and yes my plans are to get those same measurements and see if they match up.

Thanks Dave for finally elaborating on why this is such a difficult swap. Since your post, I have gotten better responses and I may even change my M.O. on the swap. Someone mentioned something about 5K big 4 or 7K 6 cyl., I don't know what he meant but I'll definitely look into it.

Thanks again Dave.

rt.

A large-displacement stock-type four-cylinder motor that will cost you about $5,000; or a six-cylinder 911 engine (or 914-6 engine) that will run you about $7000 to install. (Or at least, that is his assessment of the cost.)

That's for the motor and parts and if you do the work yourself - he said a shop was going to do the work - you can at least double both those figures once you add labor, I would guess.

I said it before (so have others) but it bears repeating:
THE most economical conversion is one that someone else did for you.
Buying a car that is already converted is almost always cheaper than converting one yourself.
If you take a car and put a different engine in it, you will prolly loose money on it when you sell it. if you buy one already converted, the seller looses, not you. It's easy to find a really nice 914/6 conversion for under 12k, but can you really build the same car for that? Prolly not.
You might think that if you do it yourself you can do it the way you want and not the way someone else wants, and you know what you have. True, but this luxury is very expensive. If you buy someone else's project you will prolly save enough to customize it to suit your wants and needs.

To take it on step further, buy a conversion "project" that is close to being completed. if you can locate one where the seller bought all the parts, worked on it, then got burned out or ran out of time, that's a money maker. you can pick it up for much less than he has into it and then add the necessary labor to get it finished. chances are you will either break even or maybe even make a few bucks. Very hard to do with cars. They are few and far between but they are out there. I've seen several 914/6 cars that are a little rough or need carbs rebuilt or whatever in the $6k range.
I'v done it, I figure I made about 10 cents an hour on my V8 car :-)
