what color is gasoline?

I'm still de-bugging my 78SC.

After draining the tank to check for rust, the gas is a pale yelllow. I thought gas was pink. Warren, I told you I had checked for rust in the tank, but thought I would check again. Is this rust in the gas tank or just yellow gas?

Razor, it looks about right, piss yellow is the color. I suspect rust would sink by the time you got it in a container. Maybe look for some sediment on the bottom. Bill.

Tim is right. I've seen gasoline in several colors.

I always think of Petroleum Gasoline as a pinkish/reddish colour.

I kinda like the smell too....

If I'm not mistaken, and that would be rare, gasoline is actually clear. They began adding dyes a few decades ago. Don't remember why. Also, unleaded used to be called White Gas until it became used as a fuel for cars at which point they again added dye so that it would match the leaded flavor.

dyes are added to differentiate between grades of gas. I you buy a drum of VP C-16 racing fuel, it will look alot different than the stuff you buy at the corner gas station.

Each distributor adds dyes to their different grades of gasoline. I first noticed this at an early age when the local distributor would fill our big gas and diesel tanks out on the farm. One time the gas or diesel would be purple, the next time green, the next time almost clear. Different color depending on what plant it came from. So about the only way to know if the gas looks abnormal is to know what it looked like when it went in. I always think the smell test is a better indicator of whether gas has gone bad or not. If you can smell the difference, then the gas is beyond bad. If there is any doubt, just change out the gas.
