Interesting '86 944 Turbo Widebody

Saw this during the Indy Mecum broadcast this weekend. I don't know how much longer they'll leave these cars up (they usually take it down fairly quickly), so I screencapped these shots. It sold for $24K.

That rear diffuser is a joke though.. how is that ever going to do anything if it's 1-2 feet off the ground?

Air traveling under the car has only one escape route, out the tail.

Managing that squeezed air as it expands upward and outward into the wild blue wander by any means possible to cut down on it's turbulence will help cut down drag.

Close proximation to the ground for the diffuser will however maximize it's effects.

Nice car, hope it never gets rear ended.

Interesting technique to avoid replacing a discolored coolant reservoir tank. Just put some masking tape down to keep a viewing window and spray paint it.

According to an EX-CNN article, Turbos are good at gripping up steep angles.

It needs the clearance to get on those steep angles.

Overall, I like it. It seems well sorted. Yeah, um, not feelin' that rear diffuser! That wing is a bit much, too.

I don't think that thing is remotely factory. I believe it's a relatively recent aftermarket modified car which makes some of the descriptions more funny, "original front splitter" and "No 4 of 4" are my favorites.

There is a French company, jacquemond, that does a lot of extra wide body stuff for P Cars.

It doesn't have a flat floorpan
The air will be turbulent

the side skirts are not low enough
the air will get out on the sides

And the diffuser is not wide enough
air can expand on the corners , next to the diffuser

Diffusuer hangs above where the air is supposed to come from under the chassis
air can expand , below the diffuser

Good points but only wind tunnel testing or track times will clear the air.......

It is not optimal or textbook classic, that much is obvious.

As a former owner of an '86 951 (944 turbo), my thoughts:

-The ride height seems higher than stock in the rear.
-Everything under the hood looks stock other than some powder coating.
-The fenders and wheels do look a little wider. I wonder how much more they weigh?

Overall, it seems like it would add some significant weight without really improving performance. This is a car that made around 250 hp and weighed 2900 lbs. stock. It looks to me like it's a stock motor pushing somewhere north of 3200 lbs. Most of the stuff hanging off of that car would have to be much closer to pavement for the desired effect so it's just mostly added weight for show.

The rocker panel does sitck out more in the one first posted, makes the door look like it's set back, not flush.

A lot less drag and weight on the stock car, I'll say that much.

Not remotely stock. Both the front and rear have been flared by a few inches. Look at the rear in both of these photos, the contour is VERY different.

Yeah, front and rear widened, rockers more like the stuff that you saw on the "street" 935 style cars that were done in the 80s, the front end and rear splitter and spoiler. But otherwise, someone appears to have slapped a body kit on a 944t and put it at an auction to make a quick buck. This looks like the Barnum and Bailey school of car sales.
