Nautical / Coastal / Beachy Nursery – The Reveal (Part 1)!

After finishing up a couple crafty projects, cleaning some clutter, and adding a few pictures to some of the frames, I can officially say the nursery is done!

I probably went a bit crazy with the theme – I mean, there’s a ton of sailboats in this room and I didn’t realize it until I was taking pictures this morning.  But overall, I LOVE how everything came out.  This room was so much fun to put together.  I searched every week at Home Goods and Christmas Tree Shops for trinkets, and then debated at Michael’s on new craft projects I wanted to attempt.  It took months to complete and I’m very glad I started early on as soon as we found out we were having a boy.

I walk into this room and instantly feel relaxed…so hopefully Baby C will feel the same :)  This is not the typical “baby” nursery.  It has a more grown-up feeling, because let’s face it – it’s me and Hubby who will be enjoying it the most his first year.  When we move to our “forever” house in the future, we can decorate a little kid’s room that is more fun and colorful.

I’ve mentioned this before in sneak peek posts, but the color of the room is a light celery green that we painted when we first moved in and the room was used as my craft space/guest bedroom.  We didn’t want to repaint so the room was designed around the green being the main color and then we used navy blue, light blue, white and browns as accent colors.  Most nautical themed rooms use red, but I didn’t want to do that and risk it looking too “Christmas-y” with all the green.

This is what you’ll see when you enter his room:

  • Captain’s Quarters sign from Home Goods
  • Welcome to my Crib sign homemade (wooden hanger and sailboat from Michaels)

When you open the door, you will see the gallery wall and white organizer that stores his books, extra wipes and diapers that don’t fit in the changing station, as well as his blankets, extra crib sheets, mattress pad protectors, bath towels, bath toys and extra lotions and wash.  Any blank frames in the gallery wall will be filled with newborn photos, family photos, and his birth announcement.

  • White Organizer, Beige Baskets, 2 White Shelves, and some frames from IKEA (Expedit)
  • Lamp, sailboat book ends, some frames, and sailboat photo boxes from Christmas Tree Shops
  • Blue baskets from Home Goods
  • Shore Do Love You Sign from TJ Maxx (gift)
  • Welcome Aboard Clock from Amazon.com

  • Sailboat, red art piece, and shell frame from Christmas Tree Shops

On the left side, there’s the guest bedroom part of the room.  We are really lucky to have enough space to keep the bed in here, so I have somewhere to sleep if he’s particularly fussy.

At the baby shower, guests were asked to decorate a welcome message on a sand dollar for Baby C.  I attached the finished ones to a corkboard with some ribbon and pins and used a couple frame holders to prop the corkboard up against the wall.

  • Corkboard is from our wedding – painted the trim white and added a layer of polka dot fabric to the top.

Next up I will share pictures of the nursery side of the room!

Nautical Nursery – Sneak Peeks

More progress has been made on the nursery in the past couple weeks – here’s a few sneak peeks.

First up is a new lamp I picked up at Christmas Tree Shops.  I love how it has a seaglass sort of feel to it and the shade is beige which goes perfectly with the room’s palette.  Best part – it was half the price of the original lamp I found at HomeGoods (that I now need to return).

Week26 015

Next is the latest project I completed.  I had found a large frame at Christmas Tree Shops (yup, one of my fav stores) a couple years ago that was meant to be used for the rehearsal dinner, but I totally forgot to pack it.  It’s an autograph frame, so there was plenty of room around the edges of the actual spot for the picture.  Instead of using it for the autograph purpose, I decided to make it more of a statement piece.  I designed a 8.5x11 photo mat on Publisher with the lyrics from “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts.  This was the song we danced to at our wedding and has always been “our song”.  I like to think it’ll now be our family song, since the lyrics work so well for parents speaking to their children.  I then added some scrapbook paper around the edges, but kept it gender neutral so I’ll be able to put it in other rooms in the future if I want.

Week26 001

We hung the frame above the changing table and left enough room to also put up some pails that I picked up at Ikea a long time ago.  They were originally meant for my scrapbook room, but I’m glad I saved them for the nautical nursery.  I plan on putting creams, small lotions and other diaper accessories in these.

Week26 011

The glider came in last week – it was much faster than the 7-14 day turnaround time.  Hubby and a friend picked it up at the local Toys R Us and put it together right away so I could make sure I liked it.  While I’m not loving the color, it’s fine and is neutral enough.  Looks like I’ll have to share the glider with someone, though, it’s her new favorite spot:

Week26 006

Perfect fit. Week26 009

And my favorite part…the wall decals I ordered from Etsy came in!  Super fast shipping and she included more decals than what’s pictured here (I still have 2 other sailboats and more waves and birds, but I’m not sure if I’ll put them somewhere else).

Week26 012

I’ve slowly been getting stuff organized, but I still have a ways to go.  This is Baby C’s closet – hanging organizer is from TJMaxx, the smaller organizers on top and boxes on the bottom are from Christmas Tree Shops (they were only $1-2 a piece!)

Week26 013

I don’t have too many more projects to work on at this point, but I do need to start thinking about what to add on the other side of the room, which is where the guest bed and a couple nightstands are.  The wall above the bed is completely blank right now and just begging for some kind of art…don’t know what yet :)

Nautical Nursery – Cloud/Star Felt & Ribbon Mobile

The first DIY project is officially done and hanging proudly in the nursery!  Here is Baby C’s mobile, which is positioned right above the changing table (I still haven’t decided if I’ll do something above the crib, as well):

Week24 009

And a couple close-ups:

Week24 006

 Week24 007

While this was pretty easy to put together, it took several days for it to be finally finished.  I suppose if I made myself work on it for more than a couple hours at a time, it would have only taken a couple days.  Basic materials include an embroidery hoop from the knitting section, lots and lots of ribbon (I used 5 different kinds), felt, cardstock, scrapbooking glue, and thin, clear filament string (from the jewelry section).

I started by printing templates for the clouds and stars right from Microsoft Publisher onto cardstock.  After cutting them out, I used the templates to start cutting the felt.  I cut two pieces of felt for each star and each cloud.  Next I would glue one side of the cardstock to one felt piece.  Then I would glue the second felt piece on top of the cardstock, so it was like the cardstock template was in the middle of a felt sandwich.  I left the cardstock in the middle so that it was more sturdy.  Once those were dry, I used a tack to push a small hole through the top of each star and cloud.  The clear string was poked through and I tied a triple knot to secure it.  Then I would measure how long I wanted each string to be and tie them to the embroidery hoop with leaving an even amount of space  between each one.  I used a drop of clear nail polish to secure each knot.  And last but not least, I started cutting all the ribbon.  I tied each piece of ribbon around the hoop and made it into a knot, which faced the outside of the hoop.  This is definitely what took the longest – there’s a ton of ribbon on that hoop!

I’m really happy with how it came out, and considering I only spent about $10, that’s even better!  I think I would have preferred to use an even thinner string so it’s more “invisible” but this was all I had on hand and I refused to buy more string when I have so much already.

I think this would go so well with any nursery theme – if Baby C were a girl, I would have definitely done this in pink and green tones with butterflies instead of stars and clouds.

Nursery Inspiration – Nautical/ Ocean / Navy Blue/ Green Decor Board

I’ve mentioned before that we will be keeping our spare bedroom the same celery green color so that way we won’t have to paint again.  Since we found out Baby C is a boy, we’ll be adding accents of navy blue, white, and maybe a dark brown.  This color scheme easily goes with a nautical/ocean theme, and that’s perfect because I have so much leftover stuff from our wedding in Maine.  Here’s my inspiration board for our green-blue-nautical-ocean nursery:

nurseryinspiration

You can find the links to all the images here at my Pinterest baby board.

I know I want to do a wall decal above the crib, so I found the cute sailboats image on Etsy.  There are a few other decals I’m considering, but that one is probably my favorite right now.  Instead of doing the canvas whale art, we found a really cute decorative tile with a whale image on it in San Diego and got it framed.  I’m just trying to figure out how it will work with all the other art pieces I want to add to the walls :)   Hopefully I’ll finally have some time to DIY this weekend.

Nursery Inspiration – Color Palettes

The most common question I get lately - “are you going to find out the sex?”  And my response is always “Oh, definitely!”  One of the reasons for this is I am a planner, so  I want to get the nursery done and over with before Baby C gets here, with only having to add a few personal touches after the birth.   I think we have about another month or so until we can find out Baby C’s gender, since everyone tells me they found out at their 18-22 week ultrasound.  I’d like to start designing the nursery ASAP once we know, so I started researching color palettes that would work for either gender.  I’ve found a lot more that are feminine and girly so it’s going to be a challenge if my mommy instinct is right in me thinking Baby C is a boy!

The color palettes I found are from Design Seeds – if you are researching color palettes for any sort of party or event, or for decorating a space, I highly recommend this site.   So you know, our spare bedroom that will be transformed into the nursery is painted a light, vibrant green.  I like to call it “celery”.  I searched for palettes using a light green hue as one of the colors so this way we can keep the paint the same and then just add accent colors in the bedding, curtains, decorations, etc.

First up – the girl palettes:

I like this because of the pink hues and other dark greens added in.  I always wanted to use “watermelon” accents so it looks like this could be a good color combo.

I love this palette because of the bright blue.  The green is a little darker than our room color, but it would still work.  I’ve looked at other nursery inspiration pictures with butterfly and flower themes, so this color set would go well if I went in that direction.

This one is different with the purples added in, but follows the same theme if I went with butterflies and flowers.  I’m not sure how I feel about purple but I do like how it’s more unique.

This goes along with the purple hues like the previous palette, but is much more feminine and a lot softer.  The green is too dark here, but I really love the ultra light blue and lavender.

Mmmm those strawberries look good – I like this palette because of the pinkish hues, and it’s nice how the other colors added in are more muted and beige.

Another berry inspiration pic :)  The blues and coral hue in this palette are gorgeous and I never thought a color combo like this could work.

I again love this because of the watermelon accents.  This may be my favorite so far.  The light green is a few shades lighter than our our actual room color but it should be okay.

And the boys’ palettes:

I was immediately drawn to this because of the tealish blue color.  I think the brown is a little too dark but if lightened up could work as a good neutral accent.

The green hue is off but I still think this combo would work – I like the browns better in this palette.

There’s a lot of neutrals in this one so I’m not sure how “fun” it would end up being for a nursery.  I do love the deeper green, though, and it could work with a forest theme.

This is probably my favorite of the boys’ palettes since it’s so tropical (big surprise if you know me).  The teals give it some more punch, though I’m not sure how I feel about the second top color.

The green in this palette is more yellow than our room color but I think the rest of the palette could work.  And this would be perfect if we did an ocean/underwater theme.

And this is the last one I liked…it’s more gender neutral, though.  I think if it was going to be for a boy’s room, the red would need to be changed and maybe the bottom blue would have to be darkened a bit.

So much fun looking through all these palettes…can’t wait until we can narrow down the list!
