QUICK SPINS

Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.

“You all got ‘til April 7 to get your shit together,” that line came in the form of a call to arms to every rapper alive as Kendrick Lamar released “The Heart Pt. 4,” a song that is a stand alone single that doesn’t even appear on his latest record. Once April 7 came, it was announced he was releasing a new album the following week – which would be Good Friday on the Christian calendar. As the week went on, new info on the album titled DAMN., would arrive and as it came at the stroke of Midnight on April 14, the world wasn’t ready. DAMN., isn’t Pimping a Butterfly again nor is it a good kid going back to the maad city.. It is Kendrick Lamar solidifying himself as the best rapper alive and a top five emcee. As he uses the words thrown against him, the headlines that are flashed around the news, DAMN. is a record that is just as much in the ethos of punk rock as it is in hip-hop. If Johnny Rotten fronted The Clash it would have that attitude and political / social rawness and awareness. Yet, Lamar, who is a fan of jazz, Afropunk, rock, and clearly 90s rap and R&B, he mixes his influences together with a record that is not just the best to come out in 2017 but an album that has the Compton rapper touching the arch of music history.
FINAL GRADE: A+

Joey Bada$$ All Amerikkkan Bada$$

Just a week before Kendrick Lamar made headlines with DAMN., Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ released his sophomore album and continues to build on the momentum he created with his stellar debut, B4 Da Money. All Amerikkkan Bada$$ is lyrical fuck you to the system, Trump, and anyone who is trying to pin someone down. Bada$$ proves he is not just one of the best young rappers around today but he goes swinging for the big leagues and if there was a record that could make everyone pay attention to him, this is it.
FINAL GRADE: A

Future Islands The Far Field

On their fifth record, Baltimore experimental outfit Future Islands delivers their thunderous best. The Far Field is a record about obsession, love, passion, and captivation. It is a record that also captures the rawness and intensity of their live shows and even gets applause from heavy hitters like Debbie Harry from Blondie who appears on the album to led her voice.
FINAL GRADE: A

MastodonEmperor of Sand

The Georgia metal monsters return with a record that is totally full circle. Emperor of Sand is a record that cherry picks nearly every type of metal, rock, and prog that the band have done over the years on each of their albums and puts it together that it not only pleases old fans but new ones as well.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Arca

The Venezuelan beatmaker and musician returns with his third record and is an expose into his own self. Following the abrasive and uncomfortable Mutant, Arca’s self-titled release is a welcome sound of what music will be in the next five years. Always pushing the envelope and creating the future of music and beats, he still stands out as someone to keep a close eye on.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Maxiimo Park Risk to Exist

On their best album in a decade, Maxiimo Park return to their roots and take influence from Brexit to create a record that would have had people gasping in their heyday. Risk to Exist is an album of catchy tunes with meaning and a band fully realizing who they are as their career has changed course.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Aimee Mann Mental Illness

One of America’s best singer / songwriters returns with a heavy record about an even heavier subject. Mann has put out her saddest, slowest, and most difficult record to date but only she can make something so hard like mental illness and give it a series of songs that showcase the importance as to why this topic is something that needs to be discussed more rather than shunned.
FINAL GRADE: B

PallbearerHeartless

The melodic doom metal band from Arkansas return and continue to put their listeners into a musical chokehold on their latest.
FINAL GRADE: B

MewVisuals

The Danish alternative band return after a few years away from the music world and come back with a record that sticks true to their formula but also fits the mold of the modern era.
FINAL GRADE: B

Nelly FurtadoThe Ride

After five years away, everyone’s favorite Canadian singer /songwriter comes back with more alternative pop classics that combine her love of hip-hop beats and folk flavor. While she describes The Ride as “a hangover album,” the album is one you can listen to sober as well and still enjoy.
FINAL GRADE: B

Joe Goddard Electric Lines

Eight years after his solo debut, the Hot Chip beatmaker and sometimes singer is back with his sophomore effort and is another one of club favorites that feature his clever lyrics and passion for dance.
FINAL GRADE: B

John Mellencamp Sad Clowns and Hillbillies

One of America’s greatest singer / songwriters is back with his latest offering on love, loss, desperation, and how the common man is getting screwed over by the system.
FINAL GRADE: B

Guided By Voices August By Cake

On their first ever double album, Guided By Voices give fans a longer GBV record than usual. It is solid but nothing too left field for the indie vets.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Robyn Hitchcock

The indie singer-songwriter returns with a record produced by The Raconteurs' Brendan Benson and delivers everything you have come to expect.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Incubus8

For their first full length album since 2011’s disappointing If Not Now When?, Incubus come back with 8, a record that had promise following 2015’s fantastic Trust Fall Side A EP. Their latest isn’t just the sound of a band who seem to lost their mojo, it feels as if they are trying too hard in the process. Linking up with Skrillex to produce a number of tracks, the California rockers sound overproduced and uninspired in a record that could have put them back as not just a novelty act but a band who are still serious about the music they make.
FINAL GRADE: C

JamiroquaiAutomaton

Music lovers around the globe rejoiced after British dance rockers Jamiroquai announced a new album earlier this year. Yet, after Automaton arrived, it failed to deliver the promise of what everyone expected. Instead of getting a funky dance album that could push the boundaries of what is currently happening in the genre, they get a formulaic record that doesn’t hit the mark.
FINAL GRADE: C

Father John Misty Pure Comedy

The former Fleet Foxes drummer returns with his third album under the Father John Misty record and we can’t actually tell if we are supposed to take it serious or if the record, like his persona, is a phony act and joke?
FINAL GRADE: D

Cold War KidsL.A. Divine

Cold War Kids had such promise when they arrived on the scene 10 years ago but now album after album, the band sound like a fraction of their former selves and come off like a band that are still grasping for musical straws.
FINAL GRADE: D

QUICK SPINS

Depeche Mode Spirit

Over 30 years and 14 albums together, Depeche Mode are still going strong with their brooding dark synths, themes, and message. Their new album, Spirit, takes all of the musical elements they have been working on since 2005’s Playing the Angel and gives it a political twist. Exposing the themes of Brexit, the Trump campaign, and the instability of the EU, Depeche Mode tells their fanbase how to rise up should they need a lesson. When not singing about the social issues of the world, the band of course look inward with introspective tunes about their lives and well-being.  While it is not too adventurous in sonic cannon it makes up for itself in the motifs they are playing on.
FINAL GRADE: A

SpoonHot Thoughts

In what could be one of their best albums, Spoon return with their ninth album and exceed all expectations. Hot Thoughts is one of their most musically provoking and catchy albums. The Austin band has seemed to shed a skin where they do not hold back.
FINAL GRAE: A

Conor OberstSalutations

The electric version of last year’s quiet Ruminations is the same record but totally different. The passion, feeling and lyrics are all equal to last year’s album but the music is Oberst showing off that his is much more than an acoustic folk hero.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Sleaford Mods English Tapas

The diabolical duo come out swinging on their latest and like Slaves did last year with Take Control, Sleaford Mods pick up the anger and intensity with English Tapas.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Raekwon The Wild

Part super hero storyline, part typical Raekwon record. The Chef returns with his latest solo venture that hears him sharpening his storytelling skills like his Wu-Tang brothers Ghostface Killah and Inspectah Deck have done and bringing a fury only he can.
FINAL GRADE: B

WireSilver / Lead

The post-punk legends return with their 16th studio album and while many would expect it to be a typical Wire record, they change their pace. The band outwit their critics and longtime fans to bring a modern twist to their sound and style but keep the blueprint of what they have done in the forefront.
FINAL GRADE: B+

British Sea Power Let the Dancers Inherit the Party

In one of their most complete records and best in over a decade, British Sea Power proves they can still write catchy tunes. The band have been in a free fall musical state since 2008 trying to stay with the times but with their latest, they seem to not attempt to keep up with the pack but stick to the music that made them a popular naughties band.
FINAL GRADE: B

Grandaddy Last Place

In their first album in 11 years, Grandaddy return with nothing too crazy but a nice reintroduction to fans and audiences who may have forgotten about them along the way.
FINAL GRADE: B

The ShinsHeart Worms

The Shines made a new record that sounds like a Shins record. It is not bad, just another Shins record.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Circa Waves Different Creatures

The second album from the English rockers picks up where they acclaimed debut left off and gives fans a few more tunes to add to the arsenal.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Laura Marling Sempre Femina

What could be one of the most ultimate girl power records of the year comes from Laura Marling. The British singer-songwriter’s sixth record is her most political, socially aware and evocative to date.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Jesus and Mary ChainDamage and Joy

For their first record in 19 years, the Scottish indie heroes return with a record of basic beats, their infamous rhythms, and lyrics about modern pop culture. It sort of sounds like a Jesus and Mary Chain but doesn’t feel like one. After 19 years, one would expect more from the icons.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Alexis Taylor - Listen With(out) Piano

The new album from the Hot Chip frontman is a reworking of last year’s somber and quiet, Piano. Now, the record has a little more flair and can be played with Piano or separately. It is as if he is adding stereo to his mono record.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Brian Jonestown MassacreDon’t Get Lost

The 14th album from the noise-pop vets is a continuation of the sound that has made them indie darlings for over 20 years.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Craig Finn We All Want the Same Things

The Hold Steady frontman goes solo for the third time and brings with him his master storytelling. The record, unlike his previous, is much more quiet and somber but still leaves the listener in awe of his lyrics.
FINAL GRADE: B-

GoldfrappSilver Eye

The electronic songstress returns with her latest offering of dance ready hits that strike the heart as well as the feet.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Dave HauseBury Me in Philly

The punk singer-songwriter returns with his third solo record and delivers an album chock full of personal stories, tragedy, triumph and the never-say-die spirit that has made him an East Coast icon for decades.

QUICK SPINS

Hot Chip Why Make Sense?
England’s favorite dance-floor electronic nerds with a new wave of tunes and a still bring enough energy and creativity to light up a night. Venturing into new areas for themselves like hip-hop and dub, Hot Chip showcase that making sense is not a priority but having fun is.
FINAL GRADE: A-

MetzMetz II
Canada’s pulse pounding post-hardcore titans return with a record that will melt more faces than they did on their 2012 debut.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Tal National Zoy Zoy
West African guitar collective Tal National return with the fever of their motherland and laid out over some of the most intricate and fantastic riffs, chords, and work in years. This band’s sophomore album, Zoy Zoy, is not to be missed by any major music fan. While it combines more than just rock and African sounds, it proves that music is our universal language.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Buena Vista Social ClubLost and Found
The final record to come from Cuba’s greatest musical exports hits home. As the Cuban embargo was lifted earlier this year and Americans begin to descend to the island that has been closed off for so long to us, it is music like this record and this band that will carry us there.
FINAL GRADE: A-

Jesse MalinNew York Before the War
Iconic New York musician, Jesse Malin, returns and hits back at the current dying feeling of the old city as gentrification and high rise buildings push every out. New York Before the War is a tribute to the New York that Malin saw as a kid and came of age into. It was harder, gritter, nastier, but most of all, it was original.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Paul Weller Saturn’s Pattern
The Modfather returns for his most ambitious and biggest sounding solo record. Saturn’s Pattern is Weller experimenting with what he can do with his guitar in a punk world but not limiting himself to the style of the genre he was apart of. It is a record inspired by outer space and it sounds like that is what he is reaching for even at his age.
FINAL GRADE: B+

Mumford & SonsWilder Mind
Mumford & Sons came to America and took over by storm. They saw immersed themselves in Americana and the only thing British about them were their tongues and blood. They were more of a States band than more American roots band that have come about in the last 20 years. With their third album, Wilder Mind, they do an about face and become an American rock band via England. While they don’t do a terrible job at it, the change in sound and identity makes you hear and see a whole new band.
FINAL GRADE: B

Surfer Blood1000 Palms
Just in time for summer, West Palm Beach, Florida’s garage rockers come back with their third album and make us want to head to the beach faster than ever before.
FINAL GRADE: B

Sojourner
Not since As Tall As Lions has a band with such an atmospheric and beautiful sound come from Long Island. This three song EP from this band hears them reaching for the stars and with enough luck, courage, and risk, they will make it because their talents are surely already there.
FINAL GRADE: B

Miami Horror All Possible Futures
Australia’s chill wave favorites Miami Horror return with their first album in five years and their sophomore record seems to have proven to fans it was worth the wait. While you are day drinking or hanging at the beach this summer, this is a record worth having on.
FINAL GRADE: B

Snoop Dogg Bush
Reteaming with Pharrell, Snoop Dogg gives a hip-pop record about his favorite plant and throws in enough swag that he shows he still has got it.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Tyler, The Creator Cherry Bomb
As Odd Future’s ringleader Tyler, The Creator gets older, so is his fan base and ideas. His slacker rapping has now gotten big names like Pharrell, Kanye West, and Schoolboy Q to join him but while he isn’t pushing boundaries, he is just being him with A-listers still wanting to work with him.
FINAL GRADE: B-

Faith No More – Sol Invictus
For the first time since 1997, the world has gotten a new Faith No More record and if you expected anything like you heard in the past, then you clearly don’t know Mike Patton and the boys. Sol Invictus is the alternative to the alternative, a record unlike anything around today but also a record that is all over the place. In some strange way, if this was another band it wouldn’t work, but for them, this is the normal.
FINAL GRADE: B-

CeremonyThe L Shaped Man
Take everything you know about Ceremony and throw it out the window. The former thrash and hardcore California band have totally altered their sound and image and while it was known they took their name from the Joy Division song, “Ceremony,” they are now mimicking their idols’ sound. The L Shaped Man is a Joy Division heavily influenced record that old fans may abandon and fans of The Horrors may embrace.
FINAL GRADE: B-

The Tallest Man on Earth Dark Bird is Home
The Swedish folk singer is back with another record of more of the same. If you are already a fan, this is one to add to the collection.
FINAL GRADE: C+

Best Coast California Nights
Yeah, you guessed it, more songs about California being awesome. We get it.
FINAL GRADE: C
