I’m special, so special

Friday 30 December 2005This is nearly 19 years old. Be careful.

I took my autistic son Nat to the dentist today, and then we were going to the bank. The dentist went fine, but he was kind of agitated at the bank. This happens quite a bit these days, and I can usually calm him down by reminding him of the schedule, and where we’re going next, and when we’ll get home. We left the bank without incident, and were driving home. I was flipping around the radio stations, looking for something to listen to, a habit that gets on Nat’s nerves.

When we got to The Pretenders’ Brass In Pocket, he really didn’t want me to change the station again, which he indicated by suddenly singing loudly along with the song, something he doesn’t usually do. So there’s Nat belting out,

Cause I gonna make you see
There’s nobody else here
No one like me
I’m special so special
I gotta have some of your attention give it to me!

Coming from Nat’s mouth, the words took on a completely different but fitting meaning.

That would be a perfect song for Matthew as well. We often have an iPod hooked into the car stereo for him so we can play his songs.

Btw, the title displays with a backslash on this Reactions page. Bug?

SS: How was your day, dear?
NB: Didn't you read my blog?

Andrea plans to start a blog too but I'm afraid that we'd start having conversations in comment threads as well.

I am reading your book and just got to page 217, which got me to check out your website. I am a physical therapist in an urban school system and I work with several students with ASD. It is a real challenge to try to see the world from their perspective and find the right balance between what they want and what I want them to do! The book has been an important reinforcer for me to always remember to listen carefully to the parents for insight into their child. Thanks for sharing! Deb
