Bethesda Announces Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Anniversary Pack | Re-release

This is the box art from the last Collectors Edition, not the super awesome 5th Anniversary Limited Edition.
As if Bethesda doesn't already have enough going on, (they had a pretty impressive booth in the West hall of this year's E3), they're coming up on the 5th Anniversary of their last Elder Scrolls title, Oblivion.  So to get you all hot and bothered on the incredibly looking Skyrim, you can go back to Tamriel and all of their expansion packs starting July 12th.

For a SRP of just $29.99, this is HUGE with a literal WORLD of content and all of the expansion packs including;
  • Knights of the Nine
  • Shivering Isles
This is all wrapped up in a nice collector's steelbook embossed with Daedric symbols, a behind-the-scenes "making of" documentary, and a full-color map of Cyrodiil and The Shivering Isles.  Lastly, it includes a $10 off coupon for the upcoming Skyrim and strategy guide.  This is truly a collectors piece, it would be awesome if they made these limited edition, and numbered for the true collector, but we're unsure of any "limited" quantities here.  We'll post images as soon as we get some from Bethesda, and look forward to sharing with you!

For fun - we've also posted the original launch trailer for Oblivion after the break, to get your warm and fuzzies all, well, warm and fuzzy.  Nostalgia is awesome!

Dead Space 2 | Review

Two years ago, EA and Visceral Games asked us to come along on a journey into the Dead of Space, with a new IP, Dead Space.  Most gamers (and critics) found a lot to love about one man's adventure aboard the USS Ishimura...and everyone was clamoring for more.  Visceral then went on to make the slightly less loved Dante's Inferno, but going back to the Dead Space franchise has proven to be just what the team needs to securely position themselves as today's foremost scare-masters.

Forget Resident Evil, Dead Space is now the king of Horror on any platform.

Picking up a few years after the first Dead Space left off, you one again take on the role of Isaac Clarke, who after defeating the Necromorphs and coming into contact with the Marker, became infected himself.  Put into a deep sleep to slow the spread, you awake three years later in a straight-jacket on board the Sprawl, a complete metropolis on one of Saturn's Moons.  Of course, your awakening is perfectly timed to a second Necromorph attack, only this time, you're on a full-populated city, complete with citizens who have no idea of the horror that is the Necromorphs.  Shortly into the first chapter (there are 15 Chapters) you are contacted by Daina, a mysterious woman who is your only ally so far...her or one of your asylum mates who occasionally pops-up early on.  Because your seeking answers, and have an alien infestation spreading quicker now that you're awake, you'll follow Daina's direction in search of help.  And I'll end story details there, as there's alot that will happen, we don't want to ruin for you.  Lets just say, it doesn't disappoint.

If you've played the first, you know how this one controls, it's a third-person over the right-shoulder perspective (to give that cramped perspective) with no HUD, as it all is either on your suit, or emitted as holograms.  Like the previous, there's a strategy to severing the limbs of your attackers, as opposed to the usual "head-shot" fest, so use your ammo wisely, as it is sparse.  Difficulty definitely seems a little harder this time around, but as long as your familiar with the play, you should do just fine on "normal" difficulty, though if you have a true surround-sound, you may want to play with it up, so you can anticipate the necromorphs who are trying to sneaky-sneak up on you.  Zero-gravity is ratched up this time around, rather than bounce from one flat surface to another, you have full-360 degree movement while in Zero-G, and while disorienting at first, you get used to it, and it's a blast.

Overall, the team at Visceral really out-did themselves this time.  I liken it to the first Uncharted, good, but flawed, whereas Uncharted 2 really polished the gameplay, and brought it to the next level, Dead Space 2 has it all.  Graphics are beautiful, the level of detail is astounding, Sound is damn near flawless, with a fitting score to go with.  You owe it to yourself to play one of 2011's game of the years.  Too bad, it came out so early, it'll probably be forgotten by the time the year ends.

Mashbuttons.com gives Dead Space 2 a 9.5 out of 10 and is available on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3

Editors Note: A copy of the game was received from the Publisher, EA for our Editorial consideration.

SKATE 3 | Review

We don't normally place the intro movies to games in our reviews, but after EA sent us SKATE 3, I watched the intro video about 3 times in a row before even playing the game.  A live-action short, that plays like a "who's-who" of skateboarding legends, from Eric Koston, to Danny Way, to Rob Dyrdek and even Jason Lee (as Coach Frank).  The video is your first taste of the polish you're in for.  This is NOT just a "RIDE".

If you've played any of the previous titles in the SKATE series, you immediately know the difference in gameplay.  This isn't arcade-like controls, a'la Tony Hawk, but a more realistic approach to surfing the sidewalk.  Your board is controlled by flicking the right analog stick.  A quick pull back, setup and flick forward, is your basic ollie.  Nollie in reverse, and a pull-back, half-circle towards the right will shove-it.  It's a fairly intuitive control scheme.  Shoulder buttons/triggers act as modifiers with grabs, etc.

After the awesome opening video, you can choose to familiarize yourself with Coach Frank and his training, or go right into the meat of the career mode.  The story this time out, is you're out to start your own Skateboarding company, but even more than that, you're out to build your skateboarding empire.  Start with a team, and expand to building custom skate parks, a giant ramp park, then film the action and share online.  CO-OP is a big player in this game, as you'll take on team challenges and compete against other skate crews online with Xbox Live or PSN.  This SKATE entry is all about creation and sharing that with the world.
Oh, and you can just skate as well.  Shred it up, and if playing with others isn't your bag, you can just free skate to your hearts content.
Considering SKATE 3's release is about 16 months after the release of SKATE 2, we were fearing a little bit of the "yearly" update syndrome that plagues most sports titles, but the team at Black Box have added plenty of new things to see and do to really separate it from it's older brother.  So far, the SKATE series has avoided the Tony Hawk pitfalls, and we will continue to enjoy it as long as possible.

Mashbuttons gives SKATE 3 a 9 out of 10.

*SKATE 3 is available now for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

First screens and Cover Athlete info on Madden 32, I mean Madden 11

EA has started the Madden 11 marketing train, and it's gaining some steam with the release of the first few images as well as the news of this year's cover athlete.  If you're into the Madden series (which a good amount of you are), you may not need me to tell you who's on the cover above, but I had to rely on good old marketing materials.  It's New Orleans' Saints QB Drew Brees.  Who?  Oh, I don't know, I guess he's someone good though, won some All-Star Bowl or something with a ring.  I kid, I kid.  We hear the demo is dropping in late July, so be sure to stop on by to keep up with all the latest trailers, screenshots and info.

>>Begin screens of Quarterbacks in various, yet similar poses

Madden 11 is out on every gaming system on earth, in early August

Hot Brink Trailer to watch with open eyes!

Once in a while a new IP comes along that has lots o' promise (it's almost St Patty's Day), and today, we bring you the just-released trailer for Brink, Bethesda's upcoming FPS from developer Splash Damage.

Even though it's purely a cinematic trailer, I'm digging the art-style, and the overall feel of the game.  It's Mirrors Edge meets actual shooting (lol), but not really.  I'm only basing that on the Parkour found in the trailer below.  I'm hoping this is a good one, I'm rooting for Bethesda to have a winner since they've started publishing more titles (Wet, Rogue Warrior, upcoming iD titles RAGE, etc).

Check out the recently re-launched official site here to keep up-to-date, and come back often as we'll have more information as it is released.

New Blur trailer

Former Microsoft-exclusive developer Bizarre Creations is working on wrapping up their latest racing creation, in the form of Blur; this time published by Activision.  A new take on the standard racing career formula, this new game will blur the lines between realistic racing action, and the arcade-like fun found in any of the "Kart" games.

You won't just race around a track, attempting to out-drive your opponents; you'll have access to an assortment of power-ups, including shooting other cars with bursts of energy, boosting your speed, and more.  From looking at the video below, you'll see some of these examples.  I get the feeling it's going to be a cross between their own Project Gotham series, injecting a storyline from the Need For Speed games, and polishing up with the action from a Mario Kart.

Check out the latest trailer showcasing the development team talking about their latest (bizarre) creation.

Blur will be available this spring on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC

Final Fantasy XIII International Trailer, Leona Lewis Video, or BOTH?

Square Enix has just seen fit to release their latest trailer for their upcoming Final Fantasy XIII.  This time it's the International Trailer, so don't get TOO upset when you see the release date as 09-03-2010 towards the end, as it's really March 9th, 2010.  Yes, it's true that those across the pond read their dates differently.  Though it's mostly cut-scenes, with some gameplay sprinkled in, check out the Leona Lewis music video trailer below.

Final Fantasy XII is available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on March 9, 2010.  Will you be there?

Marvel Super Hero Squad | Review

Synopsis: THQ has just released Marvel Super Heroes, an action adventure game based on the animated series, on a handful of systems, both console and handheld. In this title, the player is tasked with recovering Fractal fragments of the “Infinity Sword” throughout the city and ultimately to help or destroy the city. There is two available games modes available, adventure mode consists of six campaigns based on the TV series, and battle mode allow four players to fight to their demise. There are more than twenty Marvel characters available in this game, each with their own special powers and abilities to choose from and play as.

Praise: It is Marvel we are talking about here and almost everything they touch turns to gold. You start the game choosing two characters to play through the mission as and since there are a number of characters to choose from, the variety is there to keep you coming back to either master their moves or just to change things up throughout the story. The graphics and gameplay are targeting a younger audience, so it is easy to pick up and play, while the graphics are bright and characters, both playable and not, have the cute look of those in the animated series. The battle mode adds to the replay value when you have played through the story or have a group of people that are up for some arena fighting. Controls are easy to get the hang of, as you use the remote and nunchuk buttons for movement and attacks, and it does use the motion sensors to execute character specific special attacks.

Gripes: The first issue I had with this game from the start and throughout the game was the camera, it never seems to be where you need it, especially when in heated fights and you see you are being shot at but can’t find the enemy to attack due to the camera placement. Enemy AI and the level of ease are the only other issues with this title as I was able to play through without even worrying about dying as health is easily replenished. The problem with the enemy AI is that a number of times, characters of the opposing side, would sit in one place, not moving or attacking at times, while this could be put in place to make the game more playable for a younger audience or a game glitch, it was a little frustrating.

Overall, Marvel Super Hero Squad is an entertaining game to play through for a Marvel fan. However, the main focus of this title is towards a younger audience, which may turn away adult gamers such as myself, but makes for a great game to buy for a child. Since the Wii is an easier console to play with multiple people, this game is good for two people to play through and if you have a group, battle mode is even more fun to play when you have two to four people trying to prove who the better gamer is.

Mashbuttons.com gives Marvel Super Hero Squad a 6 out of 10.

Marvel Super Hero Squad is available now for the Nintendo Wii, DS, Playstation 2, and Playstation Portable.

A seriously WET review | Review

Due to the double entendre title of this game illiciting teenage boy's fantasies everywhere, let us first explain that WET, is actually short for Wetwork. Wetwork is a euphemism for assassination or killing, referring to an assassin's hands 'wet' with blood.

WET almost never saw the light of day. As one of the castaway titles from the Activision-Blizzard merger, WET lost it's publisher late in the development cycle. The team at Artificial Mind and Movement (A2M) kept working on the game, and eventually it got picked up by Bethesda Softworks, most known for their publishing RPG favorites, The Elder Scrolls series, and recently, Fallout 3.

Things to do on 8/14 | Madden

So apparently there's this game coming out today, some sports thing, something to do with a tear-shaped ball, that's tossed arond a field of sorts - I think they call it Football. There's usually some running, some hitting, it's apparently a real man's game.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, please direct your attention to the release of EA's Madden NFL 10. Apparently this is a BIG deal to millions of football fans across the globe. Personally, I'm looking forward to going to a Ponyo/Time Travelers Wife double-feature tonight.

All kidding aside, it really is the beginning of the gridiron season, the "Fight for Every Yard", the road to the big game, not only on the videogame front, but we're already into the first week of Pre-season for the NFL.

Madden NFL 10 (actually the 21st iteration of the game, not the 10th), continues the tradition of the most realistic NFL experience on any console, cause they're the ONLY NFL experience on any console. Either way - it's out, you want it, go get it.

Madden NFL 10 is available now on Xbox 360, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Wii, and PSP. Will also be on the App Store in September for all of you who want to take it on the road.

Sony lowers the price on the PS2...

No, that is not a typo. Yes, the PlayStation 2 just received a price cut. What's that you say? You want Sony to drop the price of the (current gen) PS3? Get in line, as they've said that a PS3 price cut is not in any immediate plans. Considering the PS2 has been out since 2000, how many of you are excited about a $30 price drop for a system almost 10 years old? The news is/was presented as this huge announcement from Sony - only to drop the dud that is a PS2 price drop. Sony, though we applaud your "10-year life cycle" fluff, anyone who follows the industry has moved on from the aging platform to even care about saving $30. Sure, will you sell a few more PS2's? Yeah, probably, and by now, I would have to think that each PS2 sold is pure profit - allowing them to make up from the impact of the sluggish PS3 sales.

C'mon Sony - give the public what they want. They want a PS3, it's a great machine, but for being out for over 2 years, it's still $400.
