How to make a quick and easy doggy treat jar

Updated July 2018

Make this quick and easy doggy treat jar for your best friend.  If you are like me you have little bags of treats all over the place.  Sometimes those zippers just don't seal well and you end up with stale and hard treats.  You don't want your little prince or princess to turn up his or her nose at them.

So, you can quickly make a personalized treat jar using a simple wide mouth jar some photos of your pet and decoupage glue. You can purchase a jar at the dollar store or even recycle a clear food container.  Easy, inexpensive and so much fun.

You will need:

·      Glass or recycled plastic wide mouth jar (I found one for under $3.00 at Target)

·      Decoupage glue (I use Modpodge available in craft stores)

·      Small paintbrush

·      Computer and printer with all-purpose paper

·      Photos of your dog

1.     Prepare your jar.  If there is a label on a recycled one simply soak it off in some warm water.  If the surface is sticky from the label, rub some peanut butter on it, wipe it off and wash it. Rub down the jar with alcohol.

2.     Load your desired photos onto your computer and put them all in a strip collage using your favorite photo editing program. (This way the photos are all one size).  Simply add the photos and print on all-purpose paper.  You may need a couple strips depending upon the size of your jar.

3.     Cut out each photo.  On a curved surface it is easiest to add the photos one at a time smoothing out any wrinkles with your fingers. (Don't smooth them all out though, wrinkles give it character) It may get a little messy but it washes off your hands easily. Using the small paintbrush apply some decoupage glue on the jar where you would like your photos to go. Press the photos on the wet glue area one at a time. Add a generous amount of decoupage glue on top of the photos.  Keep adding until you have added all the photos you want and let it dry.

4.       Brush a coat of decoupage glue over all the photos one last time and let dry.

5.     Fill with treats and let your pups enjoy their new jar!

Note:  Decoupage glue dries clear.

Puppy rock

My little Jack Russell terrier is my muse.  She models for me when I paint, and she has me running around as fast she runs.  So it only goes to figure that I would paint a puppy rock. And this rock doesn't need trips to the vet or walking.  It's the new millennium version of the pet rock!

Painted rocks are all the rage these days.  You can leave them in parks or stores for someone to find.  It just makes someone’s day when they pick up a painted rock with a positive message written on it.  Kindness truly does rock!

And this little puppy rock is a great gift for your favorite dog lover.  You can use it as a paperweight or just for a little extra décor on your desk or shelf.  Paint one or paint a bunch.  You can’t get a craft that is less expensive.  When you finish your puppy rock add a cute little Bowdabra bow on her head or under her chin with E6000 glue and you will have the cutest little pup!

Materials

Oval river rock
Graphite paper
Stylus
Pencil
Small paintbrush
Acrylic paint, sienna, white, black, and pink
Fine line permanent marker
Paper plate or palette
 Face pattern

For the bow:

8” 5/8” grosgrain ribbon in the desired color
Mini Bowdabra with hair bow tool and ruler attachment
Bowdabra bow wire
E6000 glue

Instructions:

1.     First, download and print the face pattern.
2.     Next, cut out the pattern and place a piece of graphite paper under it on top of the rock of your choice.  Use the stylus to trace around the pattern.

3.     Now, remove the graphite paper and go over the faint lines with a pencil if need be.

4.     Then, begin painting your rock.  Start with the Sienna and a small brush and paint the ears.  Make sure you leave a tiny space between the sections. (You will outline your puppy with the marker in this area when you are done)

5.     Next, paint the muzzle and forehead with white paint. Paint the eyes leaving the pupil area.  Paint the nose and pupils with black paint.  Paint the tongue with pink paint.

6.     Add another coat of paint on all the areas and let dry.  With a tiny bit of white paint add to small dots on each eye and two on the nose. (See photo)  Let dry completely.  Then, use the fine line permanent marker to outline all the areas on the pup.

7.     Make the optional bow.  Cut an 18” piece of Bowdabra bow wire, fold in half and insert into the Mini Bowdabra.  You will have a loop on one side and two loose wires on the other.  This serve as a slipknot when finished.

8.     Cut an eight-inch piece of 5/8” wide grosgrain ribbon.  Insert into the Bowdabra leaving a small tail.  Make a loop on the other side at the ½” mark and then make a matching loop on the other side.  Scrunch down with the Bowdabra wand.

9.     Now, insert the two loose wires through the loop and pull tight.  Separate the ends and tie a knot.  Remove from the Bowdabra. Fold each end in half and cut to dovetail.

10.  To finish your puppy rock, use some E6000 glue to add the bow to the rock and let dry.

How to make a cute quick and easy wine cork poodle

wine cork poodle

In this tutorial we will show you how to make a cute quick and easy wine cork poodle.  You can make this adorable poodle with recycled wine corks and just a few simple craft supplies that you may already have on hand.  This wine cork poodle makes a great gift for a dog lover on your list or even a sweet Mother’s day gift. I’ve made my poodle pink but you can make one in blue, white, or any color you choose.

Be sure and check out the whole series of wine cork creations by Make it easy crafts!

So let’s get started.

You will need:

Wine corks
Pink or white bump chenille stems
Pink or white chenille stems
Scrap of trim or ribbon
Small corks
Tiny pompoms
Xacto or craft knife
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Self-healing mat tor work on
Ruler
Fine 220 sandpaper
Black dimensional fabric paint

Instructions:

1.     To make the legs measure and cut a wine cork in half.  Then stand it up the cork half and slice in half vertically.  Rub the cut sides on the fine sandpaper to smooth.  Make a vertical slice on one side (this will be the side of the leg that sits on the table) and smooth on the sandpaper.  Repeat for other cork half.

2.     Now cut a piece of chenille stem that just fits around the front of the leg and attach with some hot glue.  Attach the leg with some hot glue to another whole cork. (Body)

3.     You may optionally add tiny pom poms around the leg as well if desired.

4.     Cut a ¾” piece from another cork. Save the rest for the head.

5.     Stand the ¾” cork on end and slice it in half vertically.  Lay this piece flat and slice again horizontally.  You will have two quarters (arms) Discard the other side or save for another poodle.

6.     Slice a little at the ends of each arm quarter.  This will make it glue onto the body at an angle.  Add a piece of chenille around each end of the arms like you did with the legs and attach with some hot glue.  Now glue the arms onto the body.

7.     Now attach the piece of cork you saved for the head with some hot glue onto the top of the body.

8.     Glue a tiny cork on to the front of the face (nose)

9.     To make the ears, cut a piece of matching bump chenille stem leaving the thicker part in the center and thinner parts about ½” on each end (ears)

10. Glue a matching colored pompom on each of the ends.  Attach to the center top of head and bend ears upwards.

11. Glue on some ribbon or other trim around neck for collar.

12. Cut a one-inch piece of chenille stem and glue to the center back for tail.  Attach a pompom on the end. To finish add a brown tiny pom pom for the nose.  Use the black dimensional fabric paint to add two dots for the eyes and let dry.
