Making a Rag or Raggedy Quilt

Learn to sew a raggedy quilt.

About Rag Quilts - Rag quilts are awesome to make. There is no right or wrong side of a rag quilt. Rag quilts are also called Raggedy, or Ragged quilts.
Best Fabric to Use - Since this is a "Rag Quilt" the best fabric to use would be fabrics that "rag" or "fray" nice and easy.  Fabrics like cotton, homespun, denim, and flannel work well.  While fleece does not "rag" well,  fleece rag quilts look pretty awesome when they are made because of the thickness around the seams with the fringe. Fleece rag quilts will give a "fringe" look, not a "rag" look.
Easy type Pattern - The easiest type of rag quilt for a beginner is pictured above.  A simple X sewn on each square and then the squares sewn together to form a quilt.  Many FREE Raggedy Quilt Patterns can be found here.
Difficult type Pattern A more difficult type of rag quilt would be if you added appliqud or pieced quilt into your rag quilt.  See rag photo page below for ideas.
Cost & Fabric Usage Rag quilts can cost some money to make if you are buying all of your fabric and batting new.  However, since raggedy quilts are made from small pieces of fabric and do not require large pieces, one could start with a couple of scraps of fabric and making a very small quilt (doll size). Then once you are comfortable making rag quilts attempt a bigger one, or one with shapes.
Comments - Rag quilts can be small or big. They can be useful or decorative. They can be made in squares or in different shapes.  Rag quilts give a "new" look to the world of quilts. Click here to view our raggedy quilt photo pages.

The one main difference between a regular quilt or pieced quilt, and a rag quilt is; the rag quilt is quilted 1st by sewing your  3 layered squares first, before you put your quilt together. All other quilts are made by making the quilt top first, and then quilting  the three layers together.

Once you have made your first raggedy quilt, you will want to more.  They are quick and easy and fun to make!
