This little project came from me not wanting to throw out my old posters but also not wanting to hang them anywhere in our new home. I finally decided to just get rid of them...but then I thought of something cute I could do with them! See, this is why I never want to throw anything out! I can always think of something to do with it eventually. I decided to cute little squares out from my old posters and make them into a new piece of art that reminds me of my teenage years. Here is what I did...
I collected up my posters, a picture frame, a piece of 8.5 x 11" card stock, scissors, a pencil, a ruler, a glue stick and a flat surface to work on.
I cut my card stock so that it fit on my picture frame backing.
Next came the tedious (but kind of fun) job of cutting little squares out of my posters. Measure your piece of card stock to figure out what size of squares will work for you. I ended up cutting squares that were 1" x 1". I used a ruler to mark where I needed to cut my posters. I decided on a rainbow colour scheme and cut my squares accordingly. You can work with whatever colours you like.
Next I did a rough layout to figure out how I wanted to position my squares.
Then I started transferring my rough layout onto my card stock. I glued it down piece by piece, first by going all the way up one side and then across the rows.
Ya! All done! I found a glue stick worked well but I'm sure anything sticky would do the trick.
Finally I put my new poster art into the frame and displayed it in our living room! I am so happy with the way it turned out.
I think it would also look really cute if you did something like this over top of the pieces. If you have a lot of posters from the same band you could even use a favourite lyric from that band! I would probably make the white more see through to show all my hard cutting work though ;)

such a lovely DIY! thanks for sharing, Elycia!
ReplyDeleteThat's a very clever idea and the result is really nice!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! For any girl that has an over-abundance of band posters that apparently aren't acceptable anymore- this is perfection. I simply refuse to throw away my Brand New poster from high school. Solution- turn it into artwork!
ReplyDeletehey you creative.patient.colourful you - great work! Reminds me of the paint chip idea (which you may still do with all your paint chips?!)... I love the colour transitions!
ReplyDeleteHappy New year sweet face!

Very smart idea. It looks great.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a good idea... I'm not to that point yet with my posters but that might be fun for old art calendars! I'm definitely pinning this. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea! I am currently debating what to do with all our old poster. My boyfriend wants to hang them, but I think it looks too "college"...I don't think he would be pleased if I cut them up though!! But I suppose it doesn't hurt to ask...
ReplyDeleteI love this! It came out so well!
ReplyDeleteGood job!
I love the way this turned out! Definitely have a huge tube of old posters that could be candidates for this project. I bet black & white with a touch of color would look cool too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea! I like trying to figure out what all the squares once belonged to. Is that a poster for Neon Ballroom I see?
ReplyDeleteOooo that looks awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeletethis reminds me of the paint swatch poster elsie has on her blog right now! i love this one because i have a TON of old posters in storage that i will never hang up but i'm too sappy emotional to just throw away (<-- hoarder?). now i don't have to go buy swatches i can just make a mess with the stuff i already have! and this one has texture! those lemons (?) are just too fun! such a great idea, elycia!
ReplyDeleteMight I ask, what posters did you use?
ReplyDeleteEek! Neon Ballroom! Silverchair was one of my very favorites when I was a kid!
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea. I always hang onto posters... but if I put them all up we would definitely have poster wallpaper.
Time to get cutting, I guess!
This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

This is a great idea! I had no idea you could do something like this,it's so neat. Unfortunately,I don't have my teenage posters anymore - I let them go in the trash a few months back.
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously in awe of your ingenuity! This is such an amazing idea. When I have enough posters that I no longer want, I'm definitely going to do this!

Holy man that's INCREDIBLE! I think I'll have to try something like this!
ReplyDeleteI may just do something like this with all my old (terribly geeky) comic book & sci-fi related posters from my pre-teen/teen years! GREAT idea! Love how yours turned out. :)
ReplyDeleteneon ballroom! yay!
ReplyDeleteDJ Kittie, I used a bunch of Silverchair ones (I still love them but like I said I'm just not into hanging posters), a Napoleon Dynamite one. I think that's it actually! I had already gotten rid of a bunch of my other posters from bands i didn't like a few years ago.
ReplyDeletewow this is so simple and looks so beautiful!! I'll try it sometime. just need to buy a frame first, haha. thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteum, holy amazing!!
ReplyDeleteGreat project - it looks awesome : )

ReplyDeletewow, this is awesome! well done miss
ReplyDeleteI did something like this in college for an installation art class! so fun. but mine was super duper large scale. About 6 feet high and 15 feet wide... it took foreeeeeever and was outdoors on one of the art departments courtyard walls.
ReplyDeletei love how you did it on a perfect little scale to add to a room! very pretty :) ps, I love your blog more and more everyday.
