Highlight of my first day at #ISWA2024 - the IFC organized plenary CEO Panel on "The Future of Waste" - a highly insightful and enriching discussion with 4 leading CEOs from 4 continents, truly global! Some key takeaways: ➡ Changing the Mindset on Waste: Engaging communities and stakeholders to see waste as a valuable resource is key to unlocking sector investments. ➡ Regulations to Drive Circularity: Simple, targeted regulations that are enforced enable faster market launches and attract investor confidence. ➡ Technology that fits with Local Context Matter: Advanced tech (AI, robotics) enable effective sorting and recycling but technological solutions must align with the local socio-economic context for success. ➡ For SDGs, Decarbonize Materials, not just energy. To enable this, we need clearer metrics and accounting to better assess the lifecycle environmental impacts of materials (virgin versus recycled) to guide policy and investment decisions. ➡ Public-Private Partnerships are Crucial: Ensuring affordable, well-designed and bankable waste & circularity solutions need comprehensive support. IFIs such as the World Bank and IFC have a strong role to play. A big thank you to Masood Mallick (#REsustainability), Dean Thompson (#Enviroserv), Milton Pilão (#Orizon) and Pawel Jarski (#ElementalGroup) for the rich insights, and to Nozi Tshabalala for expertly moderating the session.

Wind turbines are a proven way to produce clean, renewable energy – but for birds, the giant rotating blades can be deadly. In collaboration with BirdLife South Africa and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, IFC recently organized an in-person workshop to discuss strategies and technologies for generating wind power in South Africa—and in other countries—in a way that protects birds and other wildlife. The workshop focused on collision risk mitigation measures, covering topics including shutdown on demand, post-construction fatality monitoring, and species-specific biodiversity offsets, which should be considered during when designing and implementing wind power plants to avoid collisions and deaths. With inputs from experts working in both the power and conservation sectors, a roadmap was developed following the workshop to help guide the industry on responsible and sustainable wind energy development. IFC will host webinars on October 8th and 9th 2024 to share and discuss the ideas presented in the roadmap with a wider audience, including wind energy developers and specialists, and environmental assessment practitioners. Please contact Esther Inchoga (einchoga@ifc.org) if you are interested in joining one of the October workshops. Bird Life South Africa and the Endangered Wildlife Trust are also planning further discussions on the topic at the upcoming Birds & Renewable Energy Forum to be held in November 2024. A huge thank you to all who participated in the inaugural workshop. Your dedication and expertise are instrumental in advancing the field of wind-wildlife conservation and promoting sustainable practices in the energy sector.
