📰 The UK's games industry is globally respected, employs an estimated 76,000 people and is thought to bring £6bn a year to the UK economy. Despite a new Hollywood right on our shores, it's had little airplay during this general election. We need Government to demonstrate that they care about the success of the UK video game sector. We spoke to the BBC about how the next Government can support the UK games industry. https://lnkd.in/eV2Ty874

We want the UK to remain a great place to start a games business and invest in creative content. Globally the video games industry is set to be worth £200bn by 2025 – more than the film and recorded music sectors combined. Without support for sustainable growth the UK is at risk of losing out to European and International competitors. The next government has a unique opportunity to champion the industry and supercharge its growth. That's why we're calling on the next Government to commit to a competitive tax reliefs, enabling the next generation of games to be made here in the UK. https://zurl.co/6nYq

From protecting your operations in China to moving out to better, more affordable hubs in Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and India, let me show you how we save, improve, and solve your supply chain challenges.
Why, when the economy is faltering, authorities impose restrictions on an industry that generates significant revenue? 🎮 China's New Gaming Rules: More Than Just Games China's got new rules for online gaming. They're cutting down on how much and how often folks can play. Why? it's not just about gaming. 🤔 Here's the deal: Lots of young people aren't working and end up gaming a lot. The government's new rules might be a nudge for them to do something more productive. 💸 Money Matters: With jobs hard to find, it's often family money being spent on these games. These new rules mean less of that, easing up the pressure on families. 🌏 Bigger Picture: It's not just about controlling games. It's about changing habits and maybe even helping the job situation. 🌟 What's your take? Do you think this could actually help with youth unemployment? Drop your thoughts below! https://lnkd.in/gfzTvMqV

The number of games studios in the UK is up 18%, according to a new industry report from TIGA & Games Investor Consulting. There were 1,801 studios in the UK by the end of April 2023, with 24,155 creative full-time staff - an 11% rise. Almost 80% of the UK’s games development workforce is located outside of London, with the South East (19%), North West (12%) and West Midlands (10%) also ranking highly. A further 44,162 jobs in the games supply chain were supported indirectly by the industry. The report also reveals that the game development sector contributed £3.6 billion to the UK economy. https://lnkd.in/ehVxi_QH

Award-nominated social impact leader in the UK games industry, building a fair and inclusive pathway into the sector at Into Games. All opinions (especially political) are my own personal views.
Some really welcome calls and stakes in the ground from Ukie - The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment in their Video Games Industry Manifesto. Great work Daniel Wood and co. Our work at Into Games has helped shape some of this, and I'm personally very proud to have spearheaded work over the last twelve months to research the need and call for a national games skills fund - some of which you can still read over at GamesIndustry.Biz. It's great to see this become a bigger part of the discourse now, and publicly backed by the UK trade body. Without proper investment in skills at every level we can't solve the huge, growing challenges around diversity, training, leadership, and talent at every level of seniority. The pipeline is broken! A Digital Creativity GCSE will really help equip young people with the tools needed to understand the sector, but without fair, adequate and equitable pathways into and through those roles, we will only perpetuate the challenges and let down thousands of talented young people. I'm looking forward to seeing the sectors response to this, as it won't work unless all orgs commit to making real change. https://lnkd.in/d5bDxXfU

📢 This month, EGDF organized a call with its members to map the state of the European games industry in 2024. The call focused on overcoming current difficult times. 🎮 EGDF president, Hendrik Lesser shared his conclusions of the discussion in this article: https://zurl.co/oF2X "We will keep calm and carry on. We will help each other. We will build the road for growth and success. We will ask difficult questions and stand up when someone tries to use these difficult times to weaken our position in the value chain. Regardless if we have to stand up against key game engine developers, main gatekeeper distribution platforms or the big European telcos. We will be the clear and loud voice of the European industry. One way we can use increasingly granular data on UK businesses is to identify growth sectors and clusters, as jennifer townsend and the team have done with our #ukgamingsector report. Venture capital funding into UK gaming companies reached a record high in 2022 and H1 2023 was the second highest H1 by deal value over the past five years. At a time when there is a question mark over the UK's ability to drive growth beyond a few key locations, it is really encouraging to witness the expansion of a very geographically diverse sector.
The UK's gaming sector is experiencing rapid growth. With over 2,200 active gaming companies ranging from indie developers to major publishers, the UK has solidified its position as the largest video games market in Europe, with projections suggesting that it is on track to achieve global dominance by 2027. This expansion led to a 45% increase in office occupancy demand in 2022 and will continue to bolster the requirement for fit-for-purpose spaces. Our ‘(RE) Play’ Report is a crucial resource for understanding this dynamic sector, leasing trends, and real estate implications, helping you navigate the intersection between gaming and real estate.
