In honor of March Madness, I wanted to express exactly what the sport of basketball has done for not only my kids but also for me as a spectator. Sixteen years of soccer made me an athlete, but I had no idea what to expect when my kids laced up their shoes and stepped onto that court. The game of basketball took hold of me almost immediately; the pace, the excitement, and the absolutely mind-blowing athleticism! If my team isn't playing, I'll watch anyone who is. That is the kind of fan I am. So, what does this have to do with appraising? If you take your joy and compare it side by side with just about anything, you will find similarities, strategies, and eventually the sought-after triumph. My role is to make our team successful, to train them properly, have a concrete game plan, and, as much as possible, come away with a win. And in the event that victory is not attainable, we watch and review life's film and try again!

Last week at a luncheon, a few old mates (Denis Pagan, Dr Harry Unglik & Wayne Carey) of the North Melbourne FC 1996 Premiership Team gathered to celebrate Corey McKernan’s 50th birthday. The occasion turned into a journey through time, revisiting football victories, pivotal moments, fun times, resilience and the development of life principles forged over the past 25 years. Conversations shifted to nostalgic reflections as memories flowed, victories were recounted and the challenging times that have been life shaping. The parallels between past sporting principles and present-day realities became evident. The key messages that resonated were the importance of principles like accountability, discipline, hard work, belonging and the need for a vision. All proving to be pivotal for their success at the time. The notion of vision emerged as a significant aspect of this success and a driving force in sport, business and life. The celebration transformed into a living testament to the enduring nature of these principles, living philosophies which shaped their journeys. Corey's 50th became a tribute to the wisdom that binds them, a celebration of timeless lessons learned on the field and translating into life. #highperformance #teamsuccess #teamculture

Professional and Personal outcomes will vary... The Three Amigos all did basically the same thing here but Dusty Bottoms had a completely different result than Ned and Lucky. I can relate. Two quick examples... 1. Early in my recruiting career trying to get my footing and then again when I started ProAscend in 2015. 2. Damn near every time I play golf. 🤣 Sometimes, those around me are simply better at something than I am. It sucks to admit but it's true for all of us. That's ok...lean into what you're really good at. Other times, I was just as capable but hadn't quite figured it out yet or needed to adjust what I was doing to get the desired result. And yes...from time to time throughout my career (and still with golf every damn round) I've wondered "how the hell did that happen?". The important thing is to learn from those more successful. Learn from those that have failed. And, most importantly for me, always learn from my own successes and failures. If we end up backasswards more than once doing the same thing then that's on us. 😁

I’ve participated every year in triathlons since 2011, and here’s what I've learned: I started engaging in sports at a very young age, and I can confidently say that the principles I've learned through physical activity have laid the foundation for my development. Why? In any sport, two fundamental traits are essential: discipline and stamina. Interestingly, these are the very same characteristics that are crucial for success in any endeavor. There will always be new challenges and tough decisions that require your attention. However, with the right mindset, overcoming these challenges becomes easier. One key aspect of dealing with challenges is the understanding that you can rarely handle them on your own. This is one of the reasons I have a deep appreciation for team sports, particularly basketball. It teaches you the power of collaboration. How do we unite as a team and then turn the game in our favor? We learn to harness our collective energy to achieve success. When I apply these principles to our businesses, one element must never be forgotten: Basketball is a game, and games should be enjoyable. Engaging in something that brings you joy and aligns with your passion leads to improved performance, driven by greater effort and unwavering dedication. It offers a sense of fulfillment. So, amid all the hard work and discipline, never overlook the importance of having fun as a team. 😉 What kind of sports do you engage in and what have you learned from it?

Patience and perseverance is grossly underestimated! Extremely smart and intelligent team members tend to loose the initial value they bring when they dont have these two qualities and averagely smart team members with little or no skills, but with a high level of patience, perseverance and commitment to growing tend to acquire all the skills and intelligence they need and become extremely valuable to a team over time! Patience and perseverance is grossly underestimated! Always better to Play the long term game!
