We are thrilled to share that we have developed the world's first seedless blackberry! “A key challenge in our food system is helping people eat more high-quality, healthy foods. As part of our drive to increase the consumption of fruit and vegetables, we’re working to provide consumers with new, highly nutritious food options with improved flavor and convenience,” said Tom Adams, Pairwise Co-Founder and CEO. “With a deep understanding of the plant genome, an accurate, efficient, and scalable process, and streamlined pathway to commercialization, we are not only creating new products with our proprietary CRISPR technology, we are creating a new era of innovation in agriculture.” In addition to achieving the first seedless trait in any caneberry, we’ve created thornless and compact traits in the same variety to deliver benefits for consumers, growers, and the environment all in one.

Hear from Dan Jenkins, Pairwise Vice President, Regulatory and Government Affairs, following the recent USDA determination for our blackberries: “Pairwise commends the USDA’s recent determination that our seedless, compact, and thornless blackberries will be treated with the same regulations as conventionally bred plants. The precision and efficacy of gene editing allows us to reach the same end result as with traditional breeding, only much faster. We recently announced the achievements of these blackberry traits, and this important regulatory milestone will allow us to continue developing this new fruit variety that will deliver improved convenience to consumers, better grower economics, and sustainability benefits for the environment. We applaud the USDA for the efficiency with which they delivered this determination, and appreciate their thorough, science-based review.” #precisionbreeding #crispr #geneediting #improvingagriculture #foodinnovation #foodtech #agtech #usda #aginnovation #agrifoodtech #regulatory #blackberry #blackberries Learn more here! https://lnkd.in/eniBBgzb

We're thrilled to have incredible scientists like Lauren Elizabeth Redpath as part of the Pairwise team!
A seedless blackberry? Thanks to CALS alumna Lauren Redpath, the berry impressive feat is now possible. Redpath and her team at Pairwise leveraged the highly sophisticated CRISPR technology to develop the world's first seedless blackberry by editing its DNA. “I am interested in making fruit more accessible to more people. Plant gene editing makes these goals accessible and achievable on a faster timeline than conventional breeding," said Redpath, who earned her doctoral degree in horticultural science from CALS in 2021. As we're rounding out National Berry Month, learn more about this research: http://ncst.at/8vBj50SNF7A

Pairwise a food and agriculture company that uses gene editing and CRISPR technology to transform plants and production system, recently partnered with Bayer to license its leafy-greens blend edited with CRISPR to improve its flavor. The company says it also developed the first seedless, thornless blackberry variety using CRISPR. In this “Tip of the Iceberg” podcast episode, Pairwise co-founder and CEO Tom Adams joins host Christina Herrick to talk about the role gene editing and CRISPR technology will play in the future of the fresh produce industry. Last week, we were proud to host our annual Inventor’s Dinner that recognizes the impressive achievements of our employee #inventors and #authors over the last 12 months. At this year’s celebration, we recognized inventors of 7 newly granted patents and 11 new patent applications, plus the authors of 5 peer-reviewed research publications. These important inventions and publications are critical to our work in tackling some of the biggest challenges in food and ag, and underscore our ability to deliver new solutions in crop genetics for problems as diverse as crop disease, sub-optimal yield, and consumer interest in fresh produce. The people behind our work are ultimately what make us successful – congratulations to these inventors and authors – and we can’t wait to celebrate another round of achievements next year!

Overheard this week at the Indoor AgTech Innovation Summit: “In introducing new berry varieties to growers, we have to paint a really clear picture that this is going to be economically advantageous to them. With our new seedless blackberries, we developed this consumer-facing trait in concert to two others that will be beneficial to indoor and field growers alike: thornless and compact. In particular, our compact trait is really interesting because we made the plants smaller which allows for higher-density planting per acre – with the goal of significantly improving yield.” - @Tom Spaulding, Vice President of Pairwise's Commercial Berry business #IndoorAgTech #Pairwise #CRISPR #GeneEditing #Agriculture #FoodSystems #AgTech #AgriFoodTech

Overheard this weekend during the “Food as Medicine” panel at Aspen Ideas Health: “We’ve demonstrated seedlessness in blackberries and are now working on pitless cherries. The goal is to make all stone fruit without stones and to make them into bushes that could be grown in areas that they aren’t grown now… if you could grow them under hoop houses like blueberries, you could grow them anywhere. Also, that creates a lot more resilience to climate change.” Tom Adams, Pairwise Co-Founder and CEO #AspenIdeasHealth #GeneEditing #CRISPR #Agriculture #FoodSystems #Pairwise
