Meet Amit Mehta, International House's current Board President. "When I moved to Charlotte and as I traveled the rest of the US, I observed that relative to bigger cities, Charlotte lacked International diversity. I went to public places and didn't see as many multinational people, restaurants, entertainment - and I wanted to make a difference. That is what prompted me to start volunteering at the International House in 2012. I was teaching US Civics to immigrants, which is part of the Citizenship interview, when I was myself still a green card holder! Getting to be a member of the board has been a true honor and gives me an opportunity to make a bigger impact to my passion, but it really started long before I joined the Board of Directors. I moved to Charlotte in 1999, so I think I can now be called a native! Why do I care about the international fabric of the community in the area? Because that is what I can relate to better. I was born in India, have lived in 3 continents (traveled to 6), and my immediate family lives in 4 different countries. I love trying food from different parts of the world, learning about different cultures, and I really enjoy grocery shopping at Compare Foods and Super G! I'm truly grateful to be part of International House." Our funders are the reason International House is able to do the work we do each and every day. 260 Pre-K through 5th grade students were enrolled across 3 partnership schools this summer. 79% of students increased their literacy scores. I love how I’m able to transfer my skills and passion for elementary education in order to help prevent the summer academic slide in CMS language learners. These students had a blast in this summer camp! Students improved their literacy skills by 79% over 5 weeks! Thank you teachers!!

Excited to finally share some incredible "pinch me moment" news! ✨ I've been awarded a scholarship, by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs together with the American Councils for International Education, and chosen to represent Estonia in the YTILI | Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative Fellowship Program! 🌍 This fall the amazing opportunity will allow me to immerse myself in a professional fellowship experience in the rapidly growing city of Charlotte, NC, collaborating with the International House. ✈️🇺🇸 I look forward to enhancing my leadership and entrepreneurial skills, fostering innovation, and expanding my network with meaningful transatlantic connections. We'd like to introduce you to Cynthia! Cynthia was one of our social work interns last school year, and because she was such a great fit for our community, she has recently started at International House as our Welcome Specialist. Cynthia speaks four languages, is very intelligent, and has a smile that lights up IH. Cynthia was born and raised in the Democratic Republic of the Congo [https://lnkd.in/eWr6Wx5h]. In 2011, she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where she has established her permanent residence. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, with a Minor in Child and Family Development from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Cynthia is passionate about exploring and gaining a comprehensive understanding of diverse cultures, traditions, and celebrations. She finds great value in experiencing various cuisines, and she's committed to sharing her own cultural practices with a profound respect and appreciation for the traditions of others. Cynthia is committed to making a positive impact in the community and advocating for individuals who are unable to advocate for themselves or who may have a lack the knowledge to do so. Her career at IH provides her with the opportunity to create a meaningful impact and contribute positively to the lives of immigrants. International House is so lucky to have Cynthia as part of our team.
