Conservation International is pleased to be a part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games' lasting climate legacy that features support of the Chyulu Hills REDD+ Project in Kenya. We commend their Climate Solidarity strategy and are working with Abatable to help the Games realize their commitment to a thriving future for climate, nature, and people. Good luck to the Olympians from Kenya and around the world who are still competing and congratulations to all the athletes at this year's games.

Today marks the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games. There will be many stories of triumph and inspiration that emerge from these games but one story that hasn’t been told enough is how the City of Paris as used nature to address climate change and prepare to host the world. Extreme heat around the world has gripped headlines this summer and the Paris games could be the hottest ones on record. To put this in context: average temperatures during the months when the Summer Olympics are typically held have risen by more than 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) since the last time the Games were held in Paris in 1924. Paris is turning to nature to help address some of this expected heat: ·      The city is currently 33% green space and is working to expand this on the ground and on city roofs as a way to cool the city and mitigate the urban heat island effect (this is true in the athlete villages as well).  ·      This is in addition to a commitment to plant 170,000 trees that will also help provide shade and cool asphalt covered streets and Olympic venues/parks (tree cover can make areas 20–45°F cooler than unshaded asphalt). But perhaps one of the most visible stories around these games is how the city has spent over $1B to clean up the Seine (in part through natural infrastructure) so that the river can be swimmable for the first time since 1924. Paris is setting a precedent for carbon neutrality and nature as an answer to extreme heat as the entire world is watching. Let the games begin! https://lnkd.in/eQwj6dW4

👋 Meet Mpolokeng Ngubo from South Africa. In partnership with Conservation South Africa, Mpolokeng and other local farmers practice sustainable grazing, which supports wildlife habitats and enhances carbon capture through the regrowth of native grasses. 🌾 Through her commitment to sustainable pastoralism, Mpolokeng is restoring some of Africa's most degraded grasslands: “It is such a huge difference compared to a few years before I was participating in this program. I never could have dreamed of getting this much for my cow back then.” #IndigenousDay

Dadá Baniwa is a powerful spokesperson for climate action, Indigenous women, and other oppressed populations in Brazil. As a Conservation International Amazonia Indigenous Women’s Fellow, Dadá highlights the interconnection between Indigenous knowledge, nature, and traditional livelihoods and she is working to uplift the voices and work of the Baniwa Indigenous People: “We dream of a better life for our community. That women can be healthy, that children can be healthy, that young people can also have their own initiatives.” #IndigenousDay Conservação Internacional (CI-Brasil) The Amazonia Indigenous Women’s Fellowship Program, an initiative of Our Future Forests–Amazonia Verde project, supports Indigenous women leaders and the key roles they play in local, national and regional conservation decision-making processes.   In celebrating the International Day of Indigenous Peoples, Conservation International recognizes those almost 500 million peoples managing over one quarter of nature in the Planet of critical importance to everyone’s future. As ancestral owners of knowledge and speaking an estimate 7,000 languages representing almost 5,000 different culture, Indigenous Peoples and their rights, participation, inclusion, and ancestral knowledge are essential to climate, nature, and conservation solutions.

When you’re hungry and far from home, you might find yourself being less picky about what you eat. Not so for birds. The further they are from the core of their habitats, the pickier they get, according to a first-of-its-kind study from Conservation International, the University of Canterbury, Sao Paulo State University- The Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) and others that investigated the feeding behavior of nearly 100 bird species across six continents. Turns out, birds’ feeding preferences are highly connected to environmental stressors — and changes in their behavior could have major impacts on forests and other critical ecosystems that rely on birds to disperse seeds, said Conservation International climate expert Camila Donatti, a study co-author.
