You're looking to optimize your routes. Which transportation management tools should you use?

In my experience, working with delivering route planning tools, it’s vital for an organization that the route planning have the ability to follow the customer’s wanted process. Though, the transportation is a majority cost factor, there are a lot of processes that will happen before, during and after the transportation. I would therefore pay attention to whether the vendor of the route planning tools can support, not only my current process, but also potential future processes. And, preferably changes can be done through API or software interface, and not through costly IT projects that will make a lock-in on processes. When you learn from your data, you probably want to iterate on your processes and perfect them 👌

You need to know what the definition of "good routes" are within your organisation, and this will vary depending on who has input. It might be the cheapest in terms of fuel costs/distance travelled, or that stops are balanced across your drivers, or that stops are clustered to specific driver areas/knowledge. A routing solution can produce a well optimised plan but it might take significant time to do so, and then if a replan is needed it has to be done manually or part manually which a greatly reduce the optimisation.
