☕ ☕ Today, at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024, Jeremy Oppenheim offers us two different cups of coffee: the coffee most of us are drinking, and the coffee of opportunity. For every tonne of coffee the world produces, it produces 20 tonnes of CO2 - 5 from processing, and 15 from degradation of nature. Less than 15% of the value of this global industry reaches the farmers. Can we get to a point where all 3bn cups of coffee we consume across the world are people- and nature-positive? Where we limit chemical inputs, build supplies of coffee on agroforestry principles, and ensure that communities are actively involved in not just in production but in ownership? There is a huge opportunity in investing effectively in good disruptions in the value chain, and in developing regenerative supplies of high quality coffee that are nature positive by design Northern Sumatra is one of the places where these ideas can grow. Overall in Indonesia, the country can create at least a $25bn opportunity in coffee: it can be an industry superpower on regenerative principles. The opportunity for Indonesia is to create value chains – for coffee, and cocoa, and arenga… – that create wealth for communities, and where people are the solution.  A big thank you to Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs Republic of Indonesia for convening this important conversation #naturebasedsolutions #naturalsolutions #agroforestry #regenerativeagriculture #coffee #regeneration #conservation

The Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics Games are over... but as we return to our daily routines, it’s worth reflecting not only on the athletic performances but also on the environmental impact of this global event. 🌍 Key sustainability wins: 🌱 Ambitious Targets: Paris 2024 set the goal of cutting carbon emissions by 50% compared to London 2012—a bold step towards greener sporting events. 🏗 Eco-Friendly Infrastructure: 95% of venues were either already in place or temporary, significantly reducing the event's carbon footprint. ⚡Green Energy: The Games were powered by renewable and nuclear energy, the now-iconic zero-carbon cauldron, which held the Olympic flame, symbolized both aesthetics and sustainability. 🥗 More Plant-Based Options: Despite the dietary needs of athletes, there was a notable increase in vegetarian meal options, pushing the event towards more sustainable catering.    Systemiq’s Paris staff had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Olympic Village last December. We experienced firsthand some of the innovative sustainability measures, such as recycled beds: an impressive example of circular economy practices. Last Friday, we went to a Paralympic basketball game, which highlighted both the inclusivity and energy of the Games.    … But there’s still much room for improvement.  🔍 Emissions Transparency: We need an external audit to truly understand the carbon footprint of large events. The "Fossil Fuels in Transition" report highlights the need to move beyond heavy reliance on carbon offsets, which aren't enough to achieve real sustainability. True progress requires deeper systemic shifts to reduce emissions at the source. ✈️Rethinking Air Travel: Air travel emissions continue to pose a major challenge for global events like the Olympics. To address this, we need to rethink the aviation sector. The Mission Possible Partnership's report offers practical steps to achieve net-zero aviation by 2050, including sustainable fuels and energy efficiency. These insights are vital for reducing the carbon impact of future events. 🚗 Questioning Technological Solutions: Hydrogen-powered vehicles at Paris 2024 raised questions about long-term sustainability. The Energy Transitions Commission report on hydrogen emphasizes the challenges of scaling hydrogen in transport, especially compared to electric alternatives. While Paris 2024 marked a significant step forward, the road ahead is still long. With total emissions potentially exceeding those of Tokyo 2020 (~2 MtCO2), it’s clear that innovation and bold action are needed. The legacy of these Games must not only be about athletic excellence but also about pushing the boundaries of sustainability across every area.    #Sustainability #Paris2024 #OlympicGames #Paralympics #GreenEnergy #MissionPossiblePartnership #Hydrogen #CircularEconomy #CarbonNeutral

At #COP28 last year, the Emirates Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems and Climate Action put food centre stage in the fight for a habitable planet. But it was just a first step. Faced with the urgent challenge of action and implementation, the Declaration's 160 signatories needed clear examples of the ambitious shifts in policy, finance and governance required to transform their food systems in line with the #ParisAgreement. Recognizing this gap, a trailblazing cohort of countries formed the #AllianceOfChampions, committing to radically rethink the way their ministries and departments cooperate by adopting a 'whole-of-government' approach to #ActionOnFood. 9 months on – as showcased at an #AFSForum2024 event this week – they are actively delivering on that goal, and providing a beacon for other countries to follow as they integrate food systems transformation in their next round of Nationally Determined Contributions and biodiversity action plans. At the event, leading ACF representatives from Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Brazil and Norway joined food systems expert David Nabarro for a stocktake of their progress since joining the Alliance, and a compelling discussion on the steps needed to keep food systems firmly on the global climate agenda ahead of #COP30. Morgan Gillespy, Executive Director of the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), caught up with Sierra Leone’s agricultural minister H.E. Dr Henry Musa Kpaka on the sidelines of the event to find out how the country is raising the bar for food systems transformation through its ambitious Feed Salone programme, ACF and other initiatives. “A whole of government approach is key for delivering on Feed Salone. Every ministry that has a stake in food systems needs to come to the table. There are critical tradeoffs that need to be made, and we want to understand those and be explicit about those and the choices we make. Whether it’s the Ministry of Finance, the local government, or the research society, we are all at the table when we’re discussing Feed Salone.” Read more about Sierra Leone's Feed Salone programme, which has just secured $100m in funding from the African Development Bank 👇 https://lnkd.in/e9Ecdnee #InnovateAccelerateScale

A story that’s not being told enough: we’re seeing a remarkable acceleration in the global #energytransition. Investment in clean energy tech is set to hit $2 trillion by year-end. But emerging markets and developing economies account for just 15% of this – even though so much of the opportunity is there.    A just #energytransition is central to unleashing Indonesia’s potential for green growth. Which is why it was crucial for today’s conversation at Indonesia International Sustainability Forum 2024 to focus on solutions, the 2030 opportunity for a massive scale-up of clean energy, and structural changes that many EMDEs want to see.  Policy barriers need to be overcome, political will needs to be generated, and the cost of capital must come down. EMDEs need international private capital to be channelled at much greater rates; development finance institutions, bilateral donors and MDBs can all accelerate efforts to mobilize international private finance.  Many thanks for a hopeful and purposeful discussion with H.E. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Helen M., Tan See Leng, Nicke Widyawati and Selwin Hart.     #cleanenergy #greenfinance #blendedfinance #sustainability #greengrowth
