On a mission to save 100k lives and $1.5B healthcare costs

About us

Owlstone Medical is developing a breathalyzer for disease. With a goal of finding ways to improve non-invasive diagnostics for respiratory diseases, liver diseases, cancer, digestive health, and other conditions. Our mission is to save 100,000 lives and $1.5B in healthcare costs by advancing early detection and precision medicine. Breath Biopsy® aims to develop a new diagnostic modality making it possible to discover novel non-invasive biomarkers in breath using a platform with the potential to transition to point-of-care. The award-winning ReCIVA® Breath Sampler ensures the reliable collection of breath samples. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in breath are analyzed using state-of-the-art chemical analysis technologies. Our aim is to develop tools, potentially based on our proven microchip chemical sensor technology (FAIMS), to detect validated biomarkers of disease. The Breath Biopsy platform provides biomarker discovery and validation capabilities to support the development of applications in precision medicine for a wide range of other medical conditions. Highly sensitive and selective, our platform allows for early diagnosis when treatments are more effective and more lives can be saved. Owlstone Medical is involved in studies related to major and rapidly growing health concerns including lung cancer, asthma and liver disease. We are also participants in extensive partnerships focusing on multiple cancer types, pulmonary hypertension, mesothelioma, workplace exposures and much more. Our Breath Biopsy Products and Services are available to academic, clinical, and pharma research partners who want to develop breath-based diagnostics for their own applications. Our products and services are for research use only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.

We are delighted to announce that we have secured $6.5 million of funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop breath-based diagnostics for infectious diseases. Breath contains many potentially informative compounds that can be used for infectious disease diagnosis and monitoring, and the collection of breath has many unique advantages. Exhaled breath can be collected completely non-invasively and can be developed into portable devices that are easy to use. Through this partnership, we aim to identify non-invasive breath biomarkers of key diseases that disproportionately affect the developing world. We will then use this knowledge to build low-cost devices that can be used to reduce the burden of illness in resource-constrained environments. We are so thankful for the opportunity and are excited to get going with this project and work towards our mission of saving 100,000 lives! https://ow.ly/f9a750RmYvz

Imagine a world where you could blow into a mask and it could inform you that your liver wasn't functioning correctly, or that you had a gastrointestinal disease, or maybe a cardiometabolic issue? We might not be too far off from that reality due to the research done by UK-Based Owlstone Medical funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Foundation. Being able to non-invasively and hastily diagnose a variety of diseases has the potential to save many lives. Fierce Biotech has more below. #medicaldevice #medtech #biotech #diagnostics

🌐 Respiratory disease is the third most common cause of death across the world. Breath analysis has enormous potential to power respiratory disease research, as relevant compounds from the respiratory tract can directly enter the breath. 📑 Our ‘Breath Analysis and the Respiratory System 101’ document highlights everything you need to know about how breath analysis can be used in respiratory disease research. We answer 4 major questions: 1️⃣ Why use breath? 2️⃣ What data do we have? 3️⃣ Different breath analytical techniques. 4️⃣ How can Owlstone Medical help? For everything you need to know about breath analysis and respiratory disease research, download your free copy of our Respiratory System 101 document here: https://ow.ly/C9yJ50SbwvA #respiratory #respiratorydisease #breathanalysis

🚨 Over one billion people worldwide are affected by gastrointestinal illness. The symptoms of these conditions can be debilitating and have severe impacts on the quality of life of the patients. There is a significant unmet need in the clinic for better, non-invasive tests to diagnose gastrointestinal diseases, as well as tests that allow for treatment monitoring in order to identify if it is successful 👨⚕️ 📑 Our ‘Microbiome Hub’ provides a library of useful resources about how breath analysis can be used to collect and analyze biomarkers of gastrointestinal diseases and the metabolism of the gut microbiome. A big thank you to one of our sponsors for this year's Breath Biopsy Conference, Syft Technologies 👋 Syft Technologies are the pioneers of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) technology. SIFT-MS technology provides gas analysis of a broad range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can be produced throughout the body and exhaled in the breath, meaning SIFT-MS is often used to analyze exhaled breath samples. 🌬️ Come along and join us on the 5th-6th of November and hear fantastic talks from our sponsors and leaders in the breath research field. You can register for the event for free here: https://ow.ly/S5xf50Sw48t #BBCon24 #breathbiopsy #breathanalysis

Through our patient-centric brand OMED Health, we have developed the OMED Health Breath Analyzer, which can accurately evaluate microbiome function by analyzing the levels of hydrogen and methane in exhaled breath. 🌬️ These gases are produced by the fermentation of undigested sugars by the gut microbiome. Dysbiosis can cause an overgrowth of these microbes and therefore increase the levels of the gases produced. This can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating. 🦠 💡 The device is portable, non-invasive, and facilitates home testing and longitudinal monitoring. The OMED Health Breath Analyzer can be used in conjunction with the OMED Health Smartphone App, which facilitates the tracking of symptoms and food intake alongside breath readings. This data can be accessed by researchers to enable monitoring of the response of the gut microbiome in clinical studies. 📊 Head over to our website to find out more: https://ow.ly/CJyt50SFcFK #gutmicrobiome #breathanalysis #biomarker

🚨 Rosacea is skin a condition characterized by reddened skin and a face rash. Patients with rosacea often report gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating and abdominal pain. It is therefore hypothesized that these symptoms could be due to a link between the skin and the activity of the gut microbiome. 🦠 Our case study discusses a study that assessed the prevalence of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in rosacea patients and evaluated the effects of treating SIBO on rosacea symptoms. You can read the case study here to find out what the results of this study were: https://ow.ly/K51j50ScSqS #SIBO #rosacea #breathanalysis
