A report published yesterday by UK Health Security Agency has revealed that there were 15 new confirmed cases of infection with ceftriaxone-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae, including 5 which were extensively drug-resistant, detected in England between June 2022 and May 2024. N. gonorrhoeae, the causative agent of gonorrhoea, is becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics and there is a significant risk that the disease could become untreatable in the future. Accessible and accurate testing for common sexually transmitted infections is vital for the detection and prevention of onward transmission and to preserve the efficacy of widely used antibiotics.
