Today the UK #COVID19Inquiry starts public hearings on healthcare during the pandemic. Mencap will be giving evidence highlighting the barriers to healthcare that people with a learning disability faced. We ask that future healthcare guidance must involve the needs of people with a learning disability.

Very pleased to have a second opportunity today to feed into the diagnosis of NHS performance being led by Lord Darzi. It's thorough! Needless to say I am taking the opportunity to highlight health inequalities experienced by people with a learning disability, and to absolutely stress the link between NHS outcomes and a well-funded social care system which supports improved health before during and after engagement with the health service. I doubt there are going to be any simple fixes, but the work being led by Lord Darzi is an honest appraisal and a proper system-level analysis. We're pleased to announce that the Government has extended the #HouseholdSupportFund. We have been campaigning along with other organisations in the sector for this change. This extension ensures that many people with a learning disability will continue to receive the vital support they need to cover essential bills. Jackie O’Sullivan, Executive Director of Strategy and Influence at learning disability charity Mencap, said: “We welcome the news that the government has extended the Household Support Fund to March 2025, as it will allow Local Authorities in England to provide vital crisis support to people struggling with unaffordable costs this winter. However, as temperatures start to drop, too many people with a learning disability will still be forced to make difficult decisions about heating their homes or turning on lights. 👉Beyond this six-month extension, the government will need to provide a long-term solution that ensures people with a learning disability aren’t left in poverty.” 📢Read our statement https://brnw.ch/21wMhpE
