The IOIS Congress 2023 is happening in Berlin, Germany. It was an honour to talk to hundreds of ophthalmologists from all over the world about machine learning in ocular inflammation and in medicine in general. Unfortunately, the quality of studies published so far is poor, with major flaws in datasets, algorithms and reporting. We should always remember that general medical principles are valid, with or without machine learning. It's fundamental for doctors, scientists, editors and reviewers to understand the principles of machine learning and of evidence-based healthcare (not always diagnosing more is better). This is the only way to change the reality from exaggerated (sometimes harmful) promises to meaningful medical insights and to build products that can actually improve patient outcomes, reducing professional burden and health inequalities. #digitalhealth #machinelearning
