Sail Fast Then Wait is the largest systemic carbon inefficiency in maritime trade. It's a practice associated not only with port arrivals and cargo operations. The Canal de Panamá has now joined the Blue Visby Consortium. For more information contact the Consortium co-ordinators: Pekka Pakkanen NAPA Haris Zografakis Stephenson Harwood LLP.

We are delighted that Haris Zografakis will be joining our Carbon Working Group on Friday (2 August) to talk about Blue Visby. The Blue Visby Solution is a collaborative technological and contractual platform for the multilateral optimisation of the ocean passages of cargo ships, intended to eradicate the operational inefficiency of sail fast then wait, and deliver savings in green house gas emissions. Chamber members can join the meeting by contacting Francesco Sandrelli or Elise Nyborg. More information about Blue Visby can be found below 👇 https://bluevisby.com/

Blue Visby trials demonstrate significant reductions in CO2 emissions The Blue Visby Consortium's recent prototype trials offer a glimmer of hope in reducing maritime emissions. Conducted in March and April 2024, the trials involved ballast voyages of bulk carriers M/V Gerdt Oldendorff and M/V Begonia to the CBH Inc. grain terminal at Kwinana, Australia. The results demonstrated CO2 savings of 28.2% and 12.9%, averaging 17.3%, measured against the vessels' service speeds. These promising results suggest that the Blue Visby Solution can significantly cut emissions without disrupting voyage planning, operations or the timing of berthing, all of which are left in the hands of the participants. The trials rigorously tested the solution’s software, operational systems, contractual architecture and benefit-sharing mechanism, showing potential for a commercial rollout later this year. The CBH Prototype Trials, which follow extensive studies and a virtual pilot program, conducted over a period of about two years, are part of a larger effort involving consortium members like Marubeni and the Port Authority of New South Wales, aiming for broader impact. "The CBH Prototype Trials prove the Blue Visby Solution will be central to any effective decarbonisation strategy," said Consortium coordinators Haris Zografakis and Pekka Pakkanen. The Blue Visby solution provides a multilateral optimisation of the ocean passage for groups of ships heading for the same port. It can be used together with other measures to reduce emissions. All ships regardless of age can benefit from the solution without the need for CAPEX. Stakeholders are incentivised to use the BV solution through its general average-inspired benefits sharing scheme. While these results are encouraging, the maritime industry has seen many green initiatives sail into rough waters. The real test will be whether the Blue Visby Solution can drive substantial changes across the sector. For now, it remains a promising step towards greener maritime operations. *** Receive maritime insights directly in your inbox! Stay ahead and get the news faster. Mainstream media rarely cover shipping. The Blue Visby Solution is one of those exceptions. In 2022, it was Forbes. In 2023, it was Bloomberg. Today, the BBC Thank you BBC for reporting on the Blue Visby Solution and the Prototype Trials. https://lnkd.in/e6N3HwbW Forbes https://lnkd.in/e-c7Kp7D Bloomberg https://lnkd.in/eFsUNVm9

Yesterday, our Director of Policy for #Environment, Francesco Sandrelli, joined a panel discussion on the Carbon Intensity Index (CII) organised by Campbell Johnston Clark (CJC). The panel delved into the CII's evolution, methodologies, practical considerations, and legal implications, helping #shipping professionals gain a deeper understanding of related issues. Francesco presented: ➡ Practical challenges faced by ship owners and operators ➡ Measures and best practices for maintaining and improving CII ratings Thank you to our members, Houlder Limited and P&O Ferries, for kindly providing us with their case studies. We would also like to thank Ship & Bunker and Blue Visby for their collaboration. #decarbinisation #maritime

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is one of 32+ members of the Blue Visby Consortium. Over a period of several years, HKUST has conducted detailed studies in relation to the effect of shipping emissions on air pollution. Previous research has established that local shipping emissions contribute annually to about 90,000 premature deaths worldwide. For context, the WHO has estimated that ambient (outdoor) air pollution causes more than 4 million premature deaths worldwide annually. Until now, shipping emissions mortality research has not separated the various stages of a voyage: ocean sailing, dwelling at the anchorage, or emissions at berth. Working with data from the Blue Visby project, HKUST has now studied the effect of emissions during anchorage dwell time. Using the methodology of earlier studies, it has been possible to estimate that reducing anchorage dwell time by eradicating Sail Fast Then Wait (SFTW) has the potential to prevent some 7,000 premature deaths annually. This research complements earlier studies on the environmental impact of SFTW (other than on the climate), i.e. underwater noise pollution and whale strike risk, commissioned by Blue Visby Consortium member Ocean Conservancy, who estimated improvements to both of about 40%. These are additional benefits to the reduction of GHG emissions that the Blue Visby Solution can achieve, which averages 15%. Following a series of studies and a virtual pilot program, the Blue Visby Solution project is now conducting prototype trials in various segments. Most “just in time arrival” schemes are port based solutions that help optimise port calls and reduce congestion. But ships will still “sail fast then wait” to reach a point off the port where berthing schedules are allocated. Optimising the ocean passage between ports offers significant reductions in emissions - and that’s the gap the Blue Visby Solution is trying to fill. For it to work it has to create incentives to displace the current slew of operational measures that reward inefficient practices. These practices are deep-rooted, profitable and hard wired into the contractual architecture of shipping. Will Blue Visby lead the “change now” movement much needed by the industry to act on driving down emissions now? There is a glimmer of hope but still a big hill to climb. https://lnkd.in/ecWeajTa
