And now for some great news: De Novo Foodlabs Secures $1.5M Funding for Sustainable Lactoferrin Protein De Novo Foodlabs, a North Carolina-based precision fermentation startup, has raised $1.5 million in a seed funding round led by Joyful Ventures. This investment, along with investments from their first backers Big Idea Ventures and others, brings the total funding to $4 million. We're excited we discovered and invested in this team 3 years ago to the day! The company is dedicated to producing NanoFerrin, an animal-free lactoferrin protein critical for human health, particularly in infant development. Traditional lactoferrin is derived from bovine colostrum, which poses sustainability challenges. De Novo's innovative approach aims to provide a more eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative. With the lactoferrin market projected to exceed $3 billion by 2033, De Novo Foodlabs is well-positioned to address the rising demand for sustainable protein solutions in the food and supplement industries. Important lessons for our industry 👇 EVs and alternative proteins have a lot in common. Both challenged by consumer adoption and expansion, and both disruptors of established industries with the potential to significantly reduce environmental impact But alternative proteins (which have greater impact on capital employed) have fallen behind EVs on growth and impact. EVs grew from 0.2% of total new car sales in 2012 to 18% in 2023 while plant-based meat accounts for only 1% of meat dollar sales in US retail over five years Now is the time to be applying key lessons in the success of the EV sector to accelerate our industry 🚀 Addressing the inequality in funding is key. EVs received $40B in subsidies in 2022, while alternative proteins got a mere $635M. The trend continues in private investment, with $106B invested into EVs between 2017-2023 and only $13B invested into alternative proteins And just like EVs closed the gap with traditional vehicles on price, range, and model selection, and even ‘over delivered’ on capabilities that traditional autos lacked, alternative proteins need to match animal proteins on taste, texture, price, and convenience and “out-innovate existing food companies” to deliver an attractive value proposition to carnivores. Sustainability then becomes a bonus – rather than a tradeoff Just imagine what the industry can achieve if the right investment, innovation, and collaboration is channeled into the ecosystem. Production of products that compete with conventional proteins can finally be scaled up to drive mass adoption and mass impact Capturing even half of the market share of the global protein market would reduce agriculture and land use emissions by almost a third by 2050. This would mitigate 5 gigatons of CO2 equivalents annually – which is like removing 50% of gas-fueled cars from the road !! Here you get a really good and pedagogical explanation of why transport is not the thing to focus on for food and climate. This is a minute well spent.

Food miles: the most useless way to measure the impact of food. There, I said it. 🙊 Here are the facts: 📦 Transport only causes 4.8% of all greenhouse gases from food 🚚 Most of those emissions happen during local/regional road transport 🚢 Shipping covers the largest distances but only causes 0.17% of all food emissions ➡️ Paying attention to where your food comes from doesn’t reduce the carbon footprint. Here’s a good rule of thumb: think of how much space was necessary to grow that food, not how far it had to travel. 🥥 Coconut milk: one palm tree → low impact 🥩 Beef: fields of grass (and maybe even corn) to feed a cow → high impact So if your plant-based recipe includes coconut milk from across the world, that’s okay. People don’t like hearing this… There are still benefits for promoting a *local food system*: - more transparency - more connection to our food and landscape - more local crops and higher biodiversity But once you enter the supermarket, you’re already part of the global food system. In that context, paying attention to food miles is useless. I think this is good news, because it makes sustainable food choices simpler: make animal foods a luxury and don’t worry so much about all the other stuff. What do you think? And what does it make you feel? 😉 ---- 🙋♂️ I share facts about climate change and food. So much for the plant-based bubble having burst - Tesco see plant-based sales recovering after 'slight dip' in 2023. Fish alternatives are up by 100%, plant-based 'steaks' and 'chicken breasts' are up by 20% as are Tofu and Tempeh. Even the saturated segment of plant-based Burgers are back in growth at +10%. Consumer research by Tesco revealed that nearly half of Brits are increasing their veg intake; 82% driven by health, 25% by environment concerns and 22% trying to keep a lid on their food costs. Tesco conclude that plant-based - "the biggest food trend this century" - is being driven by Flexitarians continuing to reduce their meat consumption. #plantbased #tesco #tofu #tempeh #flexitarians
