Aquatic Foods for Healthy People and Planet
About us
WorldFish is an international, nonprofit research and innovation institution that creates, advances and translates scientific research on aquatic food systems into scalable solutions with transformational impact on human well-being and the environment. Its mission is focused on SDG 2: Zero Hunger but pays special attention to SDG 14: Life Below Water, leveraging both of these goals to score progress on other multiple SDGs. Research explores the potential of aquatic food systems as an important source of food and their role in the global transformation of food systems toward healthier and sustainable diets in the face of climate crisis. For over 45 years, WorldFish has firmly established itself as a global leader in research and innovation in sustainable and equitable aquatic food systems. Its work has enhanced the lives of millions of low- and middle-income people who depend on aquatic food systems for food, nutrition, livelihoods and overall well-being. Supported by a diverse network funders and investors aligned to shared goals, it has a global presence in 20 countries across Africa, Asia and the Pacific with 460 staff of 30 nationalities, deployed where the greatest sustainable development challenges can be addressed. WorldFish is part of One CGIAR, the world’s largest agricultural innovation network, whose mission is to “end hunger by 2030 through science to transform food, land and water systems under threat of climate change.” WorldFish is committed to promoting a work environment where diversity and inclusion is valued and we seek to have gender balance in the organization. We aim to also seek balance across other diversity dimensions. People in WorldFish are treated equally irrespective of gender, ethnicity/race, national or social origin, disability, religion, political affiliation, age, family size, marital status or any other form of personal identity.

Updates From WorldFish #AABSZanzibar This week, we are excited to announce an amazing collaboration with the University of University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) , Institute of Marine Science (IMS) and the Ocean Data Network. Together, we installed temperature and depth sensors on the same fishing vessels that currently have our vessel tracking devices. This data is crucial for enhancing our monitoring and management of small-scale fisheries. This collaboration offers a unique data collection capability, allowing us to monitor both fisheries activities and oceanographic parameters such as temperature and depth. This will provide additional data for Zanzibar to support fisheries management, climate change monitoring, and marine spatial planning. #ZAFIRI #DFDZanzibar WIOMSA - Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association Cooper Van Vranken Ocean Data Network Alex Tilley hellen kizenga mbiru moses

🌍 Advancing Sustainable Development through MELIA Approaches in R4D On September 4th, during Asia Evaluation Week in Shanghai, we were excited to co-host with CGIAR’s Independent Advisory and Evaluation Service (IAES) an insightful session on applying MELIA approaches in research-for-development (R4D). The session highlighted CGIAR IAES and WorldFish’s regional work in Asia, focusing on bridging and scaling regional efforts to create International Public Goods. 🔬 Science is the backbone of sustainable development, driving innovation, technology, and solutions to global challenges. Our lead presenter, Svetlana Negroustoueva from CGIAR IAES, underscored the critical importance of evaluating the quality of science and research in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Cristiano Rossignoli, WorldFish’s MELIA Lead, vividly shared invaluable insights from impact assessments conducted in Bangladesh, highlighting how evidence-based approaches shape program learning and policymaking to enhance the sustainability of aquatic food systems. Moogdho Mahzab, Associate Research Fellow at IFPRI, provided valuable commentary on potential integrations for greater future public goods. Special thanks to our fellow panelist, Tara Marwah, Senior Policy Manager at Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), and session moderator Gambhir Bhatta, Governance Expert at ADB’s Independent Evaluation Department. Together, we’re advancing sustainable solutions for food security, nutrition, and resilient livelihoods. #WorldFish #CGIAR #MELIA #SustainableDevelopment #Aquaculture #ImpactAssessment #R4D #SDGs
