About us
The Hong Kong Jockey Club's century-old legacy of philanthropic giving has presented an exceptional opportunity for the Club to establish the Institute of Philanthropy (loP), a "think-fund-do" tank dedicated to promoting philanthropic thought leadership at the local, regional and global levels together with its funder partners, for the common good for societies everywhere. Anchored in the East, the loP acknowledges Asia's growing significance in the global philanthropic ecosystem. With an initial sum of HKD5 billion (USD640 million) from The Hong Kong Jockey Club and its Charities Trust, the loP would provide a convening platform to bridge regional and global philanthropic efforts, scale strategic and innovative solutions for global & regional and challenges, and professionalise the philanthropic sector. The loP was formally inaugurated at the Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum in September 2023.

📢 Unveiling the launch of The Bridgespan Group report on Asian and Global Philanthropic Practices to Drive Impact, prepared with the financial support of the Institute of Philanthropy (#IoP) at #PBC2024! Institutional philanthropy in Asia and beyond has been formalising practices to achieve real and sustainable #impact, presenting an opportunity to scale up and address social and environmental issues worldwide. Analysing data from 20 of the largest global and Asian institutional philanthropies, corroborated by Bridgespan’s 20+ years of experience working with key actors in the sector, the newly launched report, prepared with the financial support of the Institute of Philanthropy (#IoP) identifies five high-impact practices for institutions looking to achieve meaningful and enduring impact: 1. Put impact first → Define a clear purpose when addressing social or environmental problems, to lay the groundwork for defining the impact you seek to achieve. 2. Set ambitious goals → Establish ambitious goals for deep and sustainable positive change at a transformative scale, aiming to address the root causes of social and environmental issues, whether at a broad population level or deep within specific communities. 3. Appropriately resource your giving → Provide focused, sustained long-term support, often with unrestricted funding, to nonprofits or operating foundations; commit resources at a scale that is commensurate with the extent of your ambitions while meeting the urgency of the need. 4. Embed data-driven learning → Leverage data as a tool for learning and decision-making to maximise the impact of your giving by ensuring your decision-making process is robust and well-informed. 5. Engage other actors → Collaborate with communities to co-create solutions, share information with other philanthropies, and partner with governments to address challenges beyond the capacity of any single organisation. Stay tuned for the comprehensive companion report coming this October for a deeper dive into the key practices embraced by leading funders. #InstituteofPhilanthropy #HKJC #HKJCCharitiesTrust #BridgespanGroup #AsianPhilanthropy
