In the remote town of Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory’s Arnhem Land, Bradley Bibby and Amy Ody are well-known names. As the store manager and assistant manager of Woolworths Gove, they operate one of Australia’s most isolated supermarkets, Gove is the only one within a 1500-kilometre radius. The store depends on two weekly shipments from Darwin, a delicate operation Bradley has mastered over five years. Starting as a trolley collector 25 years ago in Victoria’s Swan Hill, Bradley has become a central figure in the community. “Woolworths is the topic of every conversation,” Bradley shares. “People constantly ask about the barge schedule and are excited to see it come in.” Amy, who was appointed assistant manager in December 2023, has been with Woolworths since she was 16, starting her career in Rockhampton in 2008. She believes that building close ties with the community is key to the store’s success. Her passion for community is reflected in her ongoing work with the Clontarf Foundation, a Woolworths partner that creates job opportunities and builds bonds with young Indigenous men. One of Amy’s proudest achievements is her work with local twins, Charlie and Luke, who joined the store through Clontarf Foundation’s youth employment program, which uses sport to help keep young people engaged in school and to develop life skills and self-esteem. A long-time partner of Woolworths, Clontarf Foundation builds mutual connections and employment pathways across its stores and sites to create positive outcomes for young Indigenous men, like Charlie and Luke, as they transition into the workforce for further education. Initially shy, the brothers quickly gained confidence, becoming valuable team members. “It’s a proud moment because their confidence has grown immensely,” Amy recalls. “They were very quiet, but now they’re eager to interact with customers and the community.” As Woolworths celebrates 100 years since its first store opening, the company takes pride in partnerships like the one with Clontarf. Amy, who is also learning an Indigenous dialect, embodies this collaborative spirit. She is also deeply involved with Anglicare’s food diversion program, which repurposes surplus food from the Gove store. A daily highlight for Amy is when Gabby, a volunteer from Anglicare, collects food to prepare meals for homeless people and those experiencing food insecurity. “Whatever food we’re diverting to her, she goes and makes meals for the homeless and anybody who's hungry,” Amy says. “Gabby is fantastic. It means a lot to me to be making a real difference in somebody’s life.” Bradley recognises Amy’s commitment to the community as vital to the store’s growth. “I’m uplifted by my team,” he explains. “In a community-based town like Gove, it’s people like Amy who make all the difference. I’ve never been to a sausage sizzle where I’m the only one behind the barbecue.”

Time flies when you’re having fun, and we had a lot of fun celebrating the opening of our 75th Mini Woolies with The Mai-Wel Group in Maitland. The room was set up with groceries delivered by the Woolworths Maitland store team, where participants will use the simulated supermarket space to practise essential skills for the retail industry. Working with the team at TAFE NSW, participants will also have the opportunity to receive accredited training. With so many people from the local community joining the launch, there were queues out the door as participants practised on the registers, serving their guests in the brand new learning space. We were even joined by dual-sport Paralympian Rae Anderson! We’re proud to continue to grow the Mini Woolies community across Australia and New Zealand, supporting the learning experiences of over 6,000 people with disabilities.

Meet Gail Davidson, our dedicated store service assistant at Woolworths Woodcroft, South Australia, where she’s been a valued part of our team for the past five years. She’s also the proud mum of Brayden Davidson OAM PLY, a Paralympic gold medallist in the men’s T36 long jump at the 2016 Rio Games! “A lot of people don’t realise that the Paralympics don’t get a lot of funding,” says Gail. “I feel very proud that Woolworths is behind the Paralympians as well as the Olympians.” Brayden was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at four years old. Despite the challenges thrown his way, Brayden’s determination led him to break records and achieve the highest honour in his sport. “To win gold in Rio was just amazing,” says Brayden. “The dream was just to go, but to win was just unbelievable and out of this world.” We are so proud to have Gail as part of the Woolworths family, and we’re inspired by Brayden’s remarkable achievements. Today many of our team swapped our green for purple to let our LGBTQ+ colleagues and customers know that they are supported and respected on Wear it Purple Day.  This year marks our ninth consecutive year of recognising Wear It Purple Day and this year’s theme is ‘Your Passion, Your Pride’, empowering our LGBTQ+ youth to dream big and share their passion and pride, openly and visibly with their communities. At Woolworths Group, we celebrate and acknowledge the diversity of our team and we’ll continue to strive to create a feeling of belonging where everyone feels valued, respected and can be their best self.

We’re proud to be the fresh food partner of the 2024 Australian Paralympic team and we’re thrilled to have our team member, Telaya Blacksmith competing in Paris. Telaya, who works at Woolworths Engadine in NSW and is a proud Warlpiri woman, will be competing in the T20 400m and long jump events. “When I was little, I wanted to make it to the Paralympics,” says Telaya. “It’s very exciting and nerve-wrecking and I can’t believe I’ve achieved what I was supposed to.” With the support of our customers, we’ve been able to raise more than $850,000 for Paralympics Australia through purchases from the Woolworths' Green & Gold bakery range and in-store tokens. This contribution reflects a widespread commitment to celebrating the incredible athletes and their inspiring journeys. We’re also thrilled to have three Paralympians - Col Pearse, Ryley Batt OAM and Vanessa Low OAM as ambassadors throughout our campaign. Good luck Telaya, Col, Ryley, Vanessa and the rest of our Australian Paralympic representatives in Paris!

The Woolworths Trolley Tracker Report looks at the evolving purchasing behaviour of grocery customers within our business in the context of current cost of living pressures and rising inflation. The inaugural report shows that our customers have been increasingly leveraging ‘value-seeking behaviours’ in order to stretch their spend. Strong moderation of inflation has also led to stabilisation of grocery spend over the past year - including across most major categories of spend by our customers. To read the full report: https://lnkd.in/dSC6CcEh The report is based on customer insights gathered by Wiq, part of Woolworths Group.

We teamed up with Variety - the Children's Charity NSW/ACT to deliver a brand new Variety Sunshine Coach to students at Cecil Hills High School. The new school bus rolled up for students in their Support Unit to explore, with three spots that were modified to accommodate students like Aylin in wheelchairs. Head Teacher Kelly Ford said the new vehicle will improve the quality of life for students at the school with disabilities, who can now be included in school events and community activities, while also reducing the cost of excursions for parents. This is one of two Variety Sunshine Coaches that we’ve been able to support, funded via our donations to Variety NSW/ACT, as well as in-store fundraising activity. The school bus has already taken Cecil Hills High students on excursions, including on a trip to our local store to practise using shopping lists. Check it out below.
