Giving children the skills and knowlege they need to grow, harvest, prepare and eat fresh, healthy fruit and vegetables is essential and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation does an outstanding job working in schools across Australia.
Read our submission to the Inquiry into food security in Victoria to learn more about the impact of the Kitchen Garden Program in strengthening food security for children, young people, their families and communities. Late last year, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Agriculture released its report “Australian Food Story: Feeding the Nation and Beyond; Inquiry into food security in Australia.” The committee made an important recommendation for universal education on food, nutrition, and basic cooking skills, with special note of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program. https://lnkd.in/gYzB8Pvh We have significant unmet demand from schools and early childhood services in communities of need that want to implement the Kitchen Garden Program. As a not-for-profit, our lack of funding is a barrier to addressing preventable inequities. Properly supported, the Kitchen Garden Program stands ready to contribute to strengthening food security for Victorian families and communities.
