Frequently Asked Questions

What is a software intensive system?

A software intensive system is a complex system primarily operated by software that integrates various hardware and other software elements to perform specific tasks.

Software intensive systems are critical in applications that require a high level of reliability, safety and security such as autonomous vehicles, interconnected medical devices or large-scale aerospace control systems.

What is Automotive SPICE?

Automotive SPICE is the de facto standard in the automotive industry for evaluating and improving development processes of software-based systems in and around the vehicle. Automotive SPICE process maturity is evaluated in assessments performed by specifically trained assessors. Software Intensive Systems (SIS) experts have been playing a pivotal role in shaping Automotive SPICE, culminating in its latest release Automotive SPICE 4.0.

What is SOTIF?

SOTIF stands for “safety of the intended functionality.” This concept refers to ensuring that a system performs its intended functions safely, even in the absence of faults. This concept is crucial in contexts where systems operate autonomously or semi-autonomously, such as in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. The SOTIF standard ISO 21448 addresses scenarios where hazards arise from the system not performing its intended function safely due to environmental conditions, incorrect sensor data, or other unforeseen operational circumstances.

How are the requirements for software used in medical devices different?

Medical devices are designed and operated in a regulated environment, either by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Union, or other regulatory bodies. Software for medical devices must be in compliance with specific standards that mandate the application of software engineering techniques such as requirements management, verification and validation, or risk management.

What happened to kVA, Kugler Maag and Method Park?

All three companies were acquired by UL Solutions and have been united into a new business unit serving software intensive industries developing critical systems. We work with industries such as automotive, medical devices, aerospace/defense, and transportation and provide consulting, coaching, engineering, and other advanced resources like Stages process management software.
