Kill Devil Hills, NC. to Roper, NC.
After leaving Xmaskatie's, it was lunchtime
and we were both hungry, especially me,
since I hadn't had breakfast.
We stopped in Roper at Garcia's Grill on highway 308.
And I'm glad we did.
What?
If you saw this place you wouldn't stop?
That's how you miss a lot of good food.
Mr. Hawthorne had been here before with the boys
and raved about it.
He stopped the first time
since he figured it must be good
because of all the Hispanics there.
I always look for the locals frequenting a place.
That's always a good sign.
More on the wall.
I like the sign about harassing the cook.
There's Jackie, the owner and cook,
working at the grill.
We sat at the bar and chatted with her
while she cooked away.
Mr. Hawthorne ordered the soft tacos with
grilled chicken.
Sounds simple enough,
but the thin tortillas had a wonderfully fresh
corn flavor.
They were so thin,
that two were used for each taco.
These were served with onions, lettuce, tomato,
sour cream and homemade salsa.
I had the fried taco salad with grilled steak
over re-fried beans,
with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, shredded cheese,
sour cream, sliced jalapenos and the excellent salsa.
This taco salad was huge.
I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it,
but every time I pushed my plate away,
I would pull it back to me to pick off another piece.
Couldn't help myself.
This is one of those hole-in-the-wall places
that shouldn't be overlooked.
Kinda like a diamond in the rough.
How can you resist a diner
which offers both live bait and Avon products?
School bus with no windows
carting workers to the fields.
Our quite satisfying, tasty, and home-cooked meal
set us back a whopping $14.
This is good.
After my stress from trying to get started this morning,
it was nice that our first meal "on the road"
was so very enjoyable.
We may go there...thanks. Not too far off 64. Good to know just in case.
ReplyDeleteThat was a watermelon bus!
ReplyDeleteLove me some authentic Mexican food, forgot to tell you to ask for the salsa verde (muy caliente!). So excited that I made the list of stops on your excellent vacation.
I'm taking notes.......
