But now he’s free and the tables have turned…now he’s the one driven by obsession.

Can we start with the cover here? Really... I mean, c'mon... LOOK at that cover. I LOVE that cover. Yum....

Okay, sorry. What I can say? A yummy cover really grabs me. ;)

The absolute beginning of Torrent had me going, "Wahhh?" I wondered if I was actually going to like this novel knowing how damaged the characters really were. I mean, it starts off with a BANG. Warning to readers: rape does play a significant role in the novel. I wasn't expecting it but it plays into the plot because it's what changed the characters. I just wasn't mentally & emotionally quite prepared for it. But overall, it does create the characters.

Once I moved past the disturbing aspect of what was actually going on, I started really getting into Torrent. There are more violent aspects in the novel like choking and chaining in the basement.

This novel was chocked full of anger, angst & sadness. I really didn't like the addition of the son... I thought it was a little pointless right now but I'm wondering if it'll mean something more as the series continues.

The climax was nail biting and I was really surprised and caught off guard by the outcome. Needless to say, book 2 is going to be CRAZY. I cannot wait to see what happens.

So overall rating? Hmm... I'd have to give this one a 4 stars. It truly did grab me after a point and I loved reading the novel. I also really became attached to the characters.

Overall: 4 Stars
Cover: 4.5 Stars
Characters: 4 Stars
Plot: 4 Stars

Honestly, I'm not sure where I want to go with this review. I enjoyed the novel for the most part, but thinking back, I'm not sure what I read that drew me in. That sounds harsh but that's not the way I mean it. I mean it in the since that so many things were happening that it all ran together for me at some point. I don't mean that in a negative way by any means. It was a well-written, very eventful novel. Now I'm rambling. Ack! Okay. Let me see if I can organize my thoughts a little better.

The characters: I enjoyed them all. The only hard part for me was the many different POV swaps. It was hard to keep up with so many POV's AND concentrate on the mystery that needed to be solved AND concentrate on how the lead female character had to keep her son & herself safe from this unknown bad guy.

This is technically the 3rd book in a series; however, it can be read as a standalone. I can't help but wonder if I would've caught on to the mysterious aspect sooner had I already read books 1 & 2?

Now, the mystery... I was so lost... There was soooo much going on and everyone had secrets. I felt like I was running around in circles. The moment I thought someone would finally solve a small mystery, it would be snatched away and I'd end up with more questions. I know that sounds a little negative but again, I don't really mean it that way. I was kept on my toes in a constant state of "Huh? How? Why? What does that mean?"

Now, I have a son. So reading about Tyler being kidnapped or how someone attempted to kidnap him literally tore me into pieces. No, I don't really mean that literally. I mean that figuratively. Any time children are involved in novels where they could potentially be hurt or harmed in some way, I flip out. I have to push myself to read through them because that hits too close to home for me. Ya know?

So the plot... Obviously it moved quickly, even though I felt as thought I was running in circles and slamming into brick walls here and there. Right from the start, the very first scene nearly had me freaking out on this side of my Ipad because I was worried about Tyler. Scared me death. I was thinking, "holy crap...tell me this isn't going to be happening throughout the book!" There's so many questions... why does Skye have the ability she has, why does David, why did it pass on to Tyler... Who did it? Why? Are there others? Who in the hell is chasing her? What's the deal with her ex? What secrets is David's dad harboring? Question after question after question after question. Okay, you get the point.

Once I finally reached the moment of "OOOOHHHH I GET IT!" it all seems to move at a smoother pace for me. I got to a point where, towards the last 3/4 of the book, I didn't want to put it down. When that happened, all of the angst I felt towards the earlier points in the novel were just pushed aside.

So overall... I have to say that this was a solid 3.5 for me. I liked it but I think others would probably like it more.

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Creating a fight club

When Scar arrives at Haven, the facility that is meant to contain dangerous individuals such as herself, she is inducted into an underground fight club. So where did the fight club idea come from?

I have always loved fighting movies from the Karate Kid to Never Back Down, even the movie Fight Club. From the initial idea, I knew Scar liked to fight. The first scene I wrote of Scar was her brawling with an unknown opponent for a problem that doesn’t even concern her, but she just wanted to jump in to help out her friend.

When Scar is brought to her new home at Haven I didn’t want her rough and rebellious attitude to be drowned by the rules of the facility, which meant that she definitely couldn’t be caught fighting on school property. So how could I still have her still handle her own battles if she couldn’t fight? That’s where a secret fight club came into the scene.

And, just like any secret club, this secret fight club, the Ranks as it is known as, has its own hierarchy and ‘big brother watching’. The Kings are a trio who recruits new members to the Ranks through an initiation. Then there are the cameras set up around every inch of the school, all being monitored by the mysterious computer wiz known as The Ghost. The Ghost has the ability to communicate with all the fighters through any computer or other piece of technology he has set up.

Scar knows that it could be dangerous for her to join the fight club but hey, she loves to fight and I’m not going to stop her.

Chapter 1

 ______________________

THE PALE GIRL KNOCKS ME BACK AGAINST THE fleshy wall of the crowd with a couple of hard smacks. I scramble away from a woman in a purple dress, my eyes on my opponent. Over the pulsing music, the crowd keeps up their tribal chant:
     “Fight! Fight! Fight!”
This is my first time at The Basement – innovative name for a club set up on the second-storey. The dim lights and smoky atmosphere make the graffiti on the walls blaze. Between the pinball machines, sagging lounges, and the close-pressed crowd, there isn’t much room to manoeuvre.
“What are you waiting for?” the girl hisses. She could be Snow White with her porcelain skin and long, raven hair. “You started this. It was between me and her.” She extends one long finger towards my best friend, Alex.
Alex watches from the side-line. This is becoming the norm. Whenever we go out she always gets in trouble and I’m the one to fix it – usually with some bloodshed.
I don’t know what Alex did to piss this poisonous cow off, but now I want blood.
My opponent launches at me. I shield my face from her punches. It all comes down to waiting for an opening. She’s fast, almost as fast as me. It’s difficult to maintain my balance long enough to strike back.
I duck under a right hook and seize my chance. I throw an uppercut and knock her pale ass to the ground.
A single word roars through the room. “Scatter!”
The tight circle breaks and chaos erupts. The girl springs to her feet. The need to fight still blazes in her eyes, but there’s something else emerging as well. Her eyes change to a deep crimson. I stumble back, trying to suppress the cold fear swimming in my gut.
The woman in purple looms closer. Her dress drags along the floor as she moves. Grabbing my opponent by the arm, she whispers something in her ear.
The woman’s gaze meets mine. Her eyes are as white as quartz with a translucent glaze. I can’t take my attention off of her. I hadn’t noticed the long black stick she carries until now. Her body twists in my direction and she pushes people out of the way with her stick as she nears, dragging the girl – who thrashes and screams – behind her. The girl’s red eyes still focused on me.
     I can’t move.
The room plunges into darkness, leaving only the faint bank of emergency lights marking the stairs.
“Come on, Scar. We have to get out of here.” Alex seizes my arm, forcing me back into reality. She pulls me towards the scattering of kids that remain from the mass exodus.
By the time we reach the exit, sirens howl above the noise. The only means of escape is cut off and people charge back up the stairs, taking refuge on the darkened dance floor. The cops block the exit and seal the room.
A strong hand grips my shoulder and jerks me backwards into a group of girls. I fall to the ground and heavy individuals trample on my legs. A cop forces my hands behind my back and secures them in cool metal cuffs.
He pulls me to my feet and leads me down the packed staircase.
“I’ve got it from here,” a familiar voice says as a hand clutches my shoulder. “I’m sure they still need your help inside.”
“Okay,” the cop says, relinquishing his hold of me. “If you’re sure.”
“I am.” The new cop takes me over to his car and unfastens the cuffs. Opening the back door, he says, “You know, I can’t keep doing this for you.”
I open my mouth to say something, but he cuts me off.
“I don’t want to hear it. We’ll talk about this at home.”
I slide onto the vinyl seat and close the door. “Sorry, Dad,” I whisper.
I lean my head against the cold window of the car door and wait for the car to start up. It takes about five minutes before Dad’s sitting behind the wheel and we’re heading away from the club.
An involuntary shiver creeps up my spine as the image of the woman in purple comes to mind. It really looked as if she was coming for me. I don’t even want to think about what she wanted. Turning my attention to the passing scenery, I shake all thoughts of that woman out of my head.
The streetlights forge speech bubbles of illumination in the air. A faint glow from the moon casts eerie shadows behind the dark clouds. The early morning streets of Sydney are still packed with people coming and going from clubs. Most of the girls look like they borrow all their clothes from their little sisters. The guys, on the other hand, choose a different style; fighting hard to keep their pants from falling down. For some reason, they think it’s an appealing look.
I turn my head to face the back of Dad’s seat. His messy auburn hair pokes out from beneath his blue hat. He takes an occasional glimpse at me from the central mirror.
The car slams to the right as we turn a corner and my heart jerks against my ribs. We stop at the curb in front of an aging two-storey redbrick townhouse. Dad gets out and moves around to my door. He opens it and waits for me to get out – without saying a single word to me.
I glance at the house. Mum stands in the open doorway, and she doesn’t look happy. She still has her nurse uniform on. Strands of tangled sandy hair fall free of her ponytail.
I stop in front of her. “Hi, Mum.” My voice comes out as a whisper.
Mum stares at me with puffy hazel eyes for a moment before turning around and going back inside.
“You’d better get to your room.” Dad enters the apartment and leaves me standing in the doorway. “Your mother and I will speak with you later.”
I force my legs to continue moving, staring at the brownish carpet that lines the floor.
Gripping the banister, I launch myself up the stairs. The scent of lavender and bleach drifting around me brings a nauseous wave to my stomach.
I rush to my room, ignoring the loud conversation coming from my parents’ room, and close the door behind me. All the movie stars and bands from the posters covering my walls watch me with accusing eyes.
Wiping the tears away, I throw myself onto the bed without even bothering to pull the sheets down. Feeling the soft mattress beneath me, I draw my eyes shut. I can only muster enough strength to kick my shoes off before the endless abyss of sleep overtakes me.

* * *

The scene plays out as if I’m watching a movie. I stand in a church. Don’t ask me why – I’m not religious, and I’m not even sure if I’ve set foot inside a real one. Thin streamers of light drift through the dirt encrusted stained glass, making spider webs glisten high up in the rafters. The few pews that remain standing sag. The rest is kindling strewn across the floor.
I move down the aisle. The floorboards creak beneath my feet. Each step launches billows of dust through the air. I can see it. A single mirror stands at the far end beside a pedestal that holds a golden chalice. Believe me, I don’t want to be anywhere near it, but my feet have a mind of their own.
The mirror is not normal. Its surface casts no reflection. All I can see beneath the glass is a vast sea of jet-black nothingness, and yet, I know something is hiding there within the shadows. Something that waits for me, watching me. That’s what scares me the most.
‘No escape,’ a voice that doesn’t sound human sneers.
A scent drifts past my nose and makes my mouth water. It smells like cinnamon and honey, but I know it isn’t. My gaze dances around the hall, coming to rest on the chalice.
As I reach out, every nerve screams I must have it. Using my other hand, I try to stop myself. I don’t want it, I only have to tell my mutinous hand that. It won’t stop. I grip the smooth stem. It pulsates with warmth. The thick crimson liquid swirls within the bowl. I raise the cup to my mouth and my heart races as the warm liquid touches my lips.
‘No escape,’ the voice repeats in a low growl.

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Two of her short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Her first published novel was Fringe Benefits, a contemporary romance released by Pink Petal Books in April 2010. Next up was a paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, which was published in August 2010. In December 2010, Sympathy for the Devil, a paranormal romance novel, was released.

In 2011, Ms. Pope decided to strike out on her own as a self-published author, giving herself more freedom to explore a variety of genres. Her first self-published work, Breath of Life (June 2011), is a novella that takes the classic Beauty and the Beast story and sets it in a far-future Gaian (Earth) colony where the "beauty" is a colonist's daughter and the "beast" her family's alien neighbor. That book was quickly followed by Bad Vibrations (July 2011), a fast-paced but lighthearted paranormal romantic suspense novel with alien conspiracies, government cover-ups, and a hunky ufologist hero.

Releases for 2012 included No Return, a contemporary retelling of the Phantom of the Opera story; Heart of Gold, a steampunk adventure romance; Blood Will Tell, a space opera/science fiction romance set in the same universe as Breath of Life; All Fall Down, the first of the Tales of the Latter Kingdoms series; and Dragon Rose, the second book in the Latter Kingdom series. Her release schedule for 2013 is just as full, with a follow-up to Bad Vibrations in January and the final book of the trilogy in July, Binding Spell (Book 3 in the Latter Kingdoms series) in March, and then the third book in the Gaian Consortium series (The Gaia Gambit) and the fourth in the Latter Kingdoms series (Ashes of Roses) due out in the second half of the year.

Christine Pope writes as the mood takes her, and her work encompasses paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection. After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor and graphic designer in addition to writing fiction. She fell in love with Sedona, Arizona, while researching the Sedona Trilogy and now makes her home there, surrounded by the red rocks. No alien sightings, though…not yet, anyway!
